BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker savagely brands co-star Boris Johnson's 'warm-up act'

BBC Breakfast turned awkward on Tuesday morning when Dan Walker referred to his co-star as Boris Johnson’s “warm-up act”.

When the BBC Breakfast host was introducing his co-star Adam Fleming, the BBC’s Chief Political Correspondent, Dan kicked off the interview with a savage joke at the expense of Adam, who didn’t look best pleased with the comment.

Dan’s co-hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were in the usual Breakfast studio, and they went live to Dan and Adam who were in Manchester for the Conservative Party’s conference.

Sally told viewers: “Well Dan is at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, morning to you Dan.

“You’re there and you’re not alone.”

Dan appeared on the red sofa with his colleague Adam who was ready to give viewers his expert political insight.

However, Dan threw him a curve ball when he introduced him by saying: “Good morning, we’ve got the prime Minister’s warm-up act, here at the moment!”

“Adam Fleming who’s our Chief Political Correspondent.”

At first, Dan tried to continue with the segment before he realised Adam was looking rather unhappy with his introduction.

He began: “Boris Johnson’s going to be sat there in about twenty minutes’ time….

“You look very disappointed in being called the Prime Minister’s warm-up act.”

Adam replied: “Yeah, I’m not sure that’s a good look for me.”

Dan burst out laughing as Adam pointed out that Dan had been referring to the line-up on the show, as he was appearing just before Boris was due to be interviewed by Dan on the same sofa.

Seeing the funny side of it, Adam smiled as he said: “I see what you mean, it’s correct in the timeline.”

Dan seemed like he wanted to take back his comment as he admitted: “I understand politically that’s not the best thing to say.”

Dan and Adam had been covering the Conservative Party conference in Manchester on Tuesday (5 September).

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
