They say the apple doesn’t fall from the tree, and that’s certainly the case with famous musicians and their children.
John Lennon, who would have been 81 today, is one of the world’s most iconic musicians, both with The Beatles and in his solo career, and his two sons have also forged musical careers of their own.
Julian Lennon and Sean Ono Lennon have both had successful solo careers, but they’re not the only children of famous artists who have forged their own music careers.
From U2 Bono’s son to Annie Lennox’s daughter, we take a look at some of the children of famous artists who have become musicians themselves.
Julian Lennon and Sean Ono Lennon
Julian Lennon, 58, is the son of John and first wife Cynthia Lennon, and was the inspiration for The Beatles’ song Hey Jude.
He released his first album Valotte in 1984, and his song Too Late for Goodbyes reached number 6 in the charts in the same year.
Since then, Julian Lennon has released albums including The Secret Value of Daydreaming in 1996, and Photograph Smile in 1998, and has also become known for his photography work and as the founder of the White Feather Foundation.
His brother Sean Ono Lennon, 45, who is John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son, is also a musician.
Sean has released two solo albums, Into the Sun in 1998 and Friendly Fire in 2006, and also the album South of Reality in 2019, with the band Claypool Lennon Delirium.
It is reported that Sean and Julian are close, with Sean saying at the opening of Julian Lennon’s photography exhibition in 2010, “Julian is the reason I started playing music.
“When I was a kid, when his first record, Vallotte hit the charts, it was the biggest thing…”
Rufus Taylor
Rufus Taylor, 30, is the son of Queen legend Roger Taylor, and like his dad, has his trademark talent for percussion.
Growing up, he followed in his dad’s footsteps and joined the Queen and Adam Lambert concert shows as a touring drummer.
He has since joined rock band The Darkness in 2015 as their drummer, collaborating with them on their most recent albums.
Rufus can be seen on The Darkness’ Motorheart UK tour throughout November and December 2021.
Eli Hewson
Eli Hewson, 22, is the son of U2’s Bono, and like his father, has toured the world with his own band Inhaler.
Inhaler’s self-titled debut album went straight to number one when it was released in September this year, with their anthems including My Honest Face already winning over thousands of fans.
The band are currently touring across the country, before embarking on European and American tours in coming months.
Talking to Cheshire Live in June 2021 about their UK tour, Eli said, “It’s a big moment gigs coming back and people have really missed it.
“I think we definitely want to do something that’s a little different, not totally different, but something that makes it special for someone in the audience.”
Mabel
Chart-topping singer Mabel followed in her mum Neneh Cherry’s footsteps as musician.
She is known for her hit songs including Don’t Call Me Up, Boyfriend and Finders Keepers.
Mabel performed Don’t Call Me Up at the Brit Awards in 2020 in front of her mum, who was in the audience.
It was also a special event for Mabel, as she won the award for Best Female Solo Artist exactly 30 years after her mum won two Brit Awards in 1990.
Mabel’s mum Neneh Cherry rose to fame in the eighties with her songs including Buffalo Stance and collaborated with musicians in the nineties, including Youssou N’Dour on the song 7 seconds.
Lola Lennox
Lola Lennox, 30, is the youngest daughter of Eurythmics singer and music icon Annie Lennox.
As well as being a model, Lola has also followed in her mum’s footsteps as a musician.
She released her single Wherever You Go earlier this year, which was produced by her mum Annie and was about missing friends and family back home while living in Los Angeles.
Lola also duetted with her mum during the 2020 online event One World: Together at Home Concert.
Nick Collins
Anyone who has recently attended Genesis’ The Last Domino Tour will have seen Phil Collins’ son Nicholas Collins, 20, as part of the band.
Nick is currently taking on drumming duties on the tour, and has definitely inherited his father’s musical talents.
At each gig he performs songs including Follow you, Follow me and Land of Confusion with the same passion for percussion as Phil Collins in the 70s and 80s.
Nick is also the drummer in his own band Better Strangers.
