BRITs fans baffled by Harry Styles' American accent in award acceptance speech

Harry Styles left fans scratching their heads at the BRIT Awards on Tuesday night.

The singer, 27, was awarded the BRIT for Best British Single for his hit track Watermelon Sugar, and wore a face covering and 70s-style brown suit as he clambered up on stage to accept the accolade.

But he left fans baffled during his acceptance speech, as he appeared to have developed an American accent.

The former One Direction star grew up in Cheshire, but definitely had a slight American lilt to his voice.

In his speech, singer-turned-actor Harry said: “Thank you so much. It’s…I just continue to be baffled by moments like this and they make me more and more incredibly grateful to get to do this job every day.

“I am really happy to be here and proud to be celebrating British music tonight. I want to thank my fans for being so generous to me, always, and everyone in my life who has my back. Thank you so much, I love you.”

And to the key workers sitting in the audience, Harry said: “Thank you for everything you did for this country in the last year. We love you so much, thank you very very much, thank you, have a good night.”

Baffled fans flocked to Twitter to air their confusion as Harry thanked those involved in making the single a hit.

“Not mishearing am I, the lovely Harry Styles speaking with an American accent? I nearly fainted,” one wrote.

While another said: “Since when did Harry Styles have an American accent?”

And another seemingly devastated fan scribbled: “Harry Styles losing his accent is tragic, if he starts sounding any more American I’m taking his poster off my wall.”

A fourth penned: “Harry Styles sounds so American when he speaks now it scares me a bit.”

Harry was originally born in Redditch, Worcestershire, before he moved to Holmes Chapel in Cheshire as a child.

The Sign of the Times hitmaker now splits his time between his New York apartment and London, having previously owned a place in Los Angeles.

He sold his LA pad in 2019 for a whopping £4.8million.

Some fans put the change down to the fact that he has just finished filming for Olivia Wilde’s film Don’t Worry Darling in America.
