129 Channel 4 viewers have taken their grievances to the broadcasting regulator Ofcom after Breastfeeding My Boyfriend aired last week – October 25.
The regulator has said: “Viewers objected to the premise of this programme, and scenes within it.”
The controversial programme showcased the lives of Lanna Michaels and her fiancé Shawn, who had struck up a romance after meeting on a vegan dating app.
Lanna and Shaw found that they were able to connect on a much deeper level through breastfeeding.
They had hoped that appearing on the programme together and opening up about their emotional bond would shake off the taboo of adult breastfeeding.
However, if any of the recent comments on social media and This Morning are anything to go by then it seems their plan may have backfired.
Masses of people slammed the pair on Twitter for fuelling a stigma over breastfeeding in public – something many have been campaigning hard to make a thing of the past.
One tweet read: “@Channel4 are you actually taking the p**s with this #breastfeedingmyboyfriend it’s knocking me green.”
Another online user said: “Why the f**k would @Channel4 air this? Women are already shamed enough for breastfeeding in public.
Breastfeeding is literally just a natural way to feed a baby, stop being such freaks about it and keep your weird kinks to yourselves #breastfeedingmyboyfriend.”
A third joined in on the debate: “What annoyed me about this show is how sexualised some of the couples made it.
“This is why many women feel uncomfortable to breastfeed their babies in public, because of the sexual connotations people have attached to it.#breastfeedingmyboyfriend.”
While a forth fumed: “Creating a documentary called #breastfeedingmyboyfriend is further allowing people to sexualise such a natural act to feed a CHILD. channel 4 is disgusting for this.
