Delays singer Greg Gilbert dies after cancer battle, heartbroken brother confirms

Greg Gilbert has died following a five-year battle with cancer, his brother has said.

Last month it was revealed that cancer treatment had come to an end for the 44-year-old following years of treatment and gathering support from his loved ones.

In a statement released on Twitter, his brother confirmed that at 2:22pm on September 30, Greg died surrounded by the “endless love” gave to him throughout his treatment.

His brother Aaron wrote: “Your messages, your encouragement and your compassion have been our oxygen for the last five years.

“He was my brother and my best friend, and we did everything together.

“It was the greatest honour to be with him as he took one last gentle breath before leaving us. I could have sworn we were limitless…”

Aaron said he was “so lucky” to have a brother to have such “beautiful moments with”, and someone who showed him the “true meaning of grace, courage and strength”.

As he celebrated the life of his brother in front of the eyes of Greg’s many fans, Aaron added: “Thank you for sharing our grief, and for making it easier to carry at times while you were firefighting battles of your own…

“And thank you for making Greg such a special person in your lives. I’m so glad we all existed at the same time. We’re only temporary, let’s make our temporary extraordinary.”

Tributes immediately flooded in for the singer, with one user responding: “Beautiful words. You are right, Greg’s music, poetry and art will stay with us all. Wishing you all strength and love.”

Another said: “Greg was an extraordinary man and his talent and legacy will continue on through his art, his music and through his children. Sending sincere condolences.”

Last month, Greg announced he was being treated at Mountbatten Hampshire hospice near Southampton, telling his fans that he had an “uncertain future”.

At the time, he wrote: “I still believe in magic, the power of a good gesture and laughter.

“I want to fill the days ahead with all of these and so much more.”

Within 48 hours of his post, a crowdfunding appeal was set up and beat the initial target of £100,000 in donations for the hospice where he spent his final weeks.
