Rebecca Michael played iconic EastEnders character Janine Butcher for three years – but in a career overhaul, she’s now a director at Google.
Janine Butcher is nothing short of infamous in the world of EastEnders, and while three people have played her, it’s ultimately Charlie Brooks who springs to mind when people think f the character.
Charlie entered Albert Square as Janine in 1999 and has been unforgettable since – but what has the original actress been up to? Certainly not acting, that’s for sure.
Instead, Rebecca turned her life to the tech giant, and took on a career in global marketing after her stint on EastEnders.
After spending eight years acting in various art forms including theatre, TV and film, Rebecca threw in the towel and focused on her education.
Rebecca took on planning and account management across TV and print advertising, PR, digital marketing and business development.
From 2010, Rebecca has been working in various countries across the globe, including Tokyo, Singapore, and most recently, California.
As of September 2019, Rebecca has been the director of global marketing, Google search, and virtual and augmented reality, according to her LinkedIn profile.
It seems she closed the door on her acting career in 1997, but she has definitely been successful in her field after landing a top job at Google.
After Rebecca’s exit from EastEnders, actress Alexia Demetriou took over for a short while from 1993 until 1996, before we met the iconic teenage Janine with Charlie Brooks.
Charlie has since had some unforgettable storylines, with the Janine murdering quite a few men in her life, but perhaps her most famous encounter was her hubby Barry, who she pushed down a cliff.
Janine exited the show in 2014, but has since returned to stir the pot in Walford once more.
She returned as a fake doctor, but was soon exposed by Zack, Sharon’s brother, who had gone in to see the doctor – however, they’ve put those differences aside and made a budding romance.
Janine certainly hasn’t had an easy ride since she’s been back, after losing custody of her daughter to Kat Slater and accidentally setting fire to Phil Mitchell’s house – but fans are hopeful she may get her necessary redemption arc.
