GMB's Ben Shephard in tearful reunion with Tipping Point player who lost speech

Good Morning Britain viewers were moved during Thursday’s show, as they witnessed Ben Shephard’s reunion with an inspirational former Tipping Point contestant.

Helen Whitelaw appeared on the show in 2019, making it through to the finale with host Ben and celebrating a big win.

Sadly, since her appearance on the show, she has battled Motor Neurone Disease, which means she has lost her ability to speak.

Thankfully, an audio team managed to take footage from her time on the show to create a voice box for Helen, enabling her to communicate in her authentic voice.

Appearing with her daughter via video call on GMB, Helen sincerely thanked Ben for his help, admitting he had been the highlight of her Tipping Point appearance.

“My favourite moment had to be meeting the lovely Ben Shephard,” she said, adding: “Ben was a great host and his charm settled everyone’s nerves.”

Praising the voice box, Helen added: “My frustration has vanished and now I can have satisfactory conversations with everyone.”

Ben looked a little teary-eyed, as he thanked Helen for her kind words and commended her strength in battling MND.

He said: “It’s magical.

“It was lovely to see you both yesterday and be reminded of what a ball of energy your mum was.”

Meanwhile, watching from home, viewers were left emotional after watching the reunion, as they praised the team behind the audio invention.

One Twitter user said: “#GMB I’m not crying…I’ve just got something in my eye…”

“MND is such a cruel disease, this is an inspiring and lovely story. To use the ladies synthesised voice, from when she appeared on Tipping point, to communicate is amazing!” added a second.

While a third chimed: “This story is so heart warming. Wow! From one Helen to another – take care and so pleased that you have your voice back. Wonderful interview.”

“Ben this is lovely and heart warming,” added a fourth.

Moments later, Charlotte Hawkins took part in an ice bucket challenge, dunking her feet in a vat of ice to raise funds for research into MND.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
