Holby City's Hugh Quarshie hits out at the show after news that it's been axed

Holby City star Hugh Quarshie, who is best known for playing Ric Griffin in the soap, appears to have hit out at the medical drama.

Hugh, 66, shared his honest opinion with fans online regarding Holby City and what could have possibly been done to ensure it remained on screen.

On Wednesday the BBC announced that after 23 years of filming, Holby City will come to an end in March 2022, as the BBC continues their aim to move more of their productions across the country.

But since the announcement was made, several fans have been left disappointed and have shared their opinions on social media platforms on how they feel the show could have worked better.

On Thursday a Holby fan took to Twitter and wrote: “I liked Holby, but thought it had lost it’s way, concentrating too much on staff relationships hence I stopped watching!”

But actor Hugh was quick to pick up on this and shared his take on the programme being axed by the BBC.

Replying directly to the original tweeter Hugh said: “Holby had good days and it had bad days, but it always had integrity.

“Rather than being shut down, wouldn’t it have been preferable to see it back on a medical track?”

Fans of the star also agreed with Hugh’s sentiment and replied back to his tweet.

One fan penned: “Completely agree Hugh it needed more discovery of strange diseases and racing against the clock (as much as the NHS and 60 minutes would allow) to find a cure or medical solution.

“To see many of the well established members of the cast leave was maybe a sign of the shows struggle.”

Another fan agreed with Hugh and wrote: “Well said. I always watched it for the medical stuff, and actually learned a lot from that, to the point I was diagnosing patients coming on to the show! Seems a few shows have gone off track these days.

“Keep Holby, just take it back to its origins.”

Hugh Quarshie starred in the hospital drama from 2001–2020 and was involved in several crucial storylines.

On Wednesday the statement from the BBC, regarding Holby City finalising, read: “We are incredibly proud of Holby City but it’s with great sadness that we are announcing that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.

“We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC’s commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC’s drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing team at BBC Studios and all the cast and crew who have been involved in the show since 1999.”

The broadcaster added: “Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.

“We look forward to working with the team over the coming months to ensure that when it ends, Holby goes out on a high.”
