Jesy Nelson has opened up about her final days as a member of Little Mix, recalling a tearful panic attack which caused even the other members to suggest she quit the group.
The 30-year-old, who is set to release her first solo single soon, was left in tears recently when she spoke of her final days in the X Factor-winning group.
She and her bandmates – Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – had just filmed the video for Sweet Melody, which had already caused Jesy some stress, as they had been told they would be wearing bikinis.
Jesy explained that, because of lockdown, she’d put on some weight and eventually she wore a corset, while the other girls wore more revealing outfits.
Speaking to the Guardian, Jesy cried as she said: “I did the music video and had a panic attack, and it was pretty mental that day. God, I haven’t really spoken about it and I’m getting upset.”
She went on: “After the video I just got back in a really dark place and ended up back in hospital. That was when my mum said, ‘No more.’”
The Essex beauty continued through tears: “I had already decided. Then the girls spoke to Mum and said, ‘We think Jesy should come out of this now. She has to look after herself.’”
Since quitting the group at the end of 2020, Jesy has had to deal with so-called fans who slammed her for making the difficult decision.
She added: “I know there are people who think I’ve let the other girls down, and that I’m so selfish, but I do think there comes a time in life when you do have to be selfish and look after yourself, and it was really affecting me mentally.”
Sadly, despite Perrie and Leigh-Anne going through some of the most exciting times in their lives as they prepare to become mothers, the girls aren’t in contact.
Jesy admitted that she hadn’t been in touch with the other three members since she quit, saying that they “all need time”.
It’s not all sadness though, as the bombshell treated fans to a teaser for her first solo single Boyz earlier this week.
She has said that she is now producing music which is more similar to what she listens to, rather than the classic pop that Little Mix made.
In the teaser image, Jesy wore a Union Jack bikini and a matching bandana, while she was surrounded by muscle men working out in various states of undress.
Earlier this week, Little Mix celebrated 10 years as a band and announced a special greatest hits album that would also include some brand new songs.
