Kate Garraway hasn't seen Derek since Christmas after warning he might not wake

Kate Garraway has revealed she hasn’t seen her husband Derek Draper since Christmas.

The Good Morning Britain host made the candid admission during Friday’s show during a live interview with Frank Bruno.

During the interview, the boxing legend asked Kate to send on his best wishes to Derek, 53, who is hospital bound.

Bruno said: “If you see your husband today, just give him my regards please Kate.”

Looking downcast, Kate replied: “I will do, unfortunately I’m not allowed to. Haven’t for two months.

“But I will try to pass that message on. That’s very kind.”

Kate later added to co-host Ben Shephard: “I haven’t seen him [Derek] since Christmas, which of course means he’s back into a situation where he’s looking at strangers in masks.

“And I think that’s the situation for everybody, they’ve got somebody in the hospital at the moment, it’s not unique.

“It’s tough. It’s also the same for people in care homes. And when you’re someone like him who is dealing with a consciousness problem and trying to emerge, I can’t help but fear it’s not helpful.”

His condition was so bad that in March doctors decided to put him in a medically induced coma to give his body the best chance of fighting coronavirus.

While he is now Covid-19 free, Derek’s body has been ravaged by the illness.

He is understood to be suffering with PDOC (Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness), and Kate’s co-star Piers Morgan confirmed that Kate has been warned by doctors that Derek might never wake up.

He said on air: “When I see these Covid, not the deniers, but also the Covid down-players – the ones who constantly want to talk it all down – to say it’s just another flu and we’re overreacting, ask around now, ask enough people and you’ll find somebody.’ ‘We know from our colleague Kate Garraway whose husband Derek is still in a coma from Covid.

“He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this and it’s heartbreaking.”

Speaking just before Christmas, Kate explained that while she’s grateful for the around the clock support doctors are giving him, he isn’t out of the woods yet.

The 53-year-old said: “Well there have been a few challenges kicking off and going on, challenge with Derek as there always are but also outside of Derek there was a littles scare.

“We found out that children had been in contact with someone who tested positive shortly after they met.

“So just to be ultra cautious I kept them at home and we luckily we all god negative tests. We actually had two negative tests as you know, more is more.”

She added: “Back then in March nobody offered us a coronavirus test, they just weren’t happening – it was right back when hospitals were swamped in that funny week where schools had just close but lockdown hadn’t started.

“Anyway, we are all fine we are all safe but I just wanted to keep you safe Ben and the crew at Smooth Radio so we just started isolating until we got the clearings.”
