Steph McGovern, 38, has revealed in a hilarious new episode of her show Steph’s Packed Lunch that she blagged her way to a job when she first interviewed for her role on BBC Breakfast in 2010.
The journalist became the daily programme’s main business presenter and was often seen filling in for the show’s anchors, hosting the entire programme too.
The star revealed the story to guest Chris Kamara on her show today, admitting that she told a white lie to get the coveted job of a lifetime.
Asked if she’d ever done live TV before, Steph said yes.
“I remember when I got the job of presenting Breakfast news, I’d been asked, ‘Have you ever done live TV before?’” Steph shared, recalling the events 11 years ago.
“And I said yes… And I hadn’t,” Steph said with a laugh.
“You’ve got to blag it sometimes in life and I told them 10 seconds before we went to air,” the presenter continued.
“I’ve got a count in my ear now and it was a bit like this…” she gestured.
The mother-of-one went on to say she even told Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid about her lie just before her first live broadcast on-air.
“Susanna Reid said ‘Good luck’ and I said ‘Thanks’,” Steph remembered.
“She said, ‘But you’ve done live TV before?’
“I said, ‘No I haven’t’ and the director gasped in my ear,” the business journalist added.
Despite Steph’s dicy beginnings on BBC Breakfast, the presenter continues to go from strength to strength in her career.
As well as Steph’s Packed Lunch, she has presented Pocket Money Pitch for CBBC and Shop Well For Less with The One Show host Alex Jones.
Steph is also known for her investigative journalism and presenting on BBC Watchdog.
Steph’s Packed Lunch airs on weekdays on Channel 4.
