The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh witnessed a tense head-to-head between chaser Shaun Wallace and one player during Saturday’s edition of the ITV quiz show.
And after a back and forth – the likes of which has rarely been seen on the hugely-popular programme – the Dark Destroyer finally managed to knock out the contestant, who was 30-year-old airline pilot Alex from Devon.
Exhausted and relieved, Shaun got up out of his seat and lay down on the floor, leaving an alarmed Bradley wondering what was going to happen next.
“Forget Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Bake Off…” Bradley was exclaiming with a shake of his head.
“That was the most extraordinary head to head I’ve ever seen.”
Having returned to his chair at the head of the table, Shaun then smirked: “The comeback kid.”
“Let me tell ya we’ve now gotta shut the series down, we’ve run out of questions,” the host joked.
Following the nail-biting round, Bradley even went on to apologise to the next player.
“I’m sorry to have kept you waiting so long,” he told Oyin, a pharmacist from Hove.
Viewers were also gripped by the exciting action during today’s episode, with one person tweeting: “That was an absolute jinxed round #thechase.”
“Alex must have nightmares about this ! #TheChase,” another wondered.
A third cried: “#TheChase God almighty!”
“He’s done #thechase,” a fourth declared, followed by: “#TheChase has gone insane with how close this is.”
“This is the best chase ever #TheChase,” another fan added.
Despite an unusually jam-packed show, the team didn’t manage to beat the chaser and after Alex and Oyin were knocked out, only disability worker Terry, 54, and author Julie, 44, were left to face Shaun in the final round.
Despite their best efforts, the duo failed to beat Shaun, and lost their £4,000 prize fund.
The Chase continues weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
