This Morning guest slams BBC drama Vigil for being 'inaccurate beyond belief'

This Morning guest and former submarine captain Chris Reynolds has slammed BBC drama Vigil for being ‘inaccurate beyond belief’.

Chris appeared on Friday’s episode of the ITV daytime show alongside presenter Alice Beer and gave her a tour around the HMS Ocelot for a segment titled ‘Vigil: The Real Story’.

At the end of the segment, Chris was asked if he was “loving” the drama.

In response, he said: “It’s a drama, isn’t it?

“It’s so inaccurate, it’s beyond belief.

“The only thing I would say, I don’t particularly like the way they portray the submarine service who are highly-professional, highly-skilled and that doesn’t come across in the drama.

“That’s my only criticism,” he added.

A surprised Alice responded: “I have to reassure you Chris that watching it, and I am and I’m gripped, I have nothing but respect for our armed services and anyone who serves on a submarine.”

This Morning viewers also appeared taken aback by Chris’s comments.

One wrote: “But you still watch it, Chris. Just enjoy it for what it is.

“It’s a drama not a documentary.”

Earlier in the segment, Chris did acknowledge that the stowing of a body in a torpedo tube, as depicted in the BBC series, was indeed plausible if a crew member died on board.

He said: “You would try to put it in the freezer but if the freezer’s full, there’s nowhere else on board a submarine to stow a body.”

He added: “If it was me, and you couldn’t put the body anywhere else, then yes [it could happen].”

Chris also confirmed the number of bunks in the accommodation space were ‘absolutely realistic’.

Vigil stars Line of Duty actor Martin Compston, Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie and Bodyguard’s Suranne Jones.

The miniseries follows the mysterious death of a crew member aboard the HMS Vigil, with a traumatised detective later boarding the submarine to investigate the incident.

Speaking about the show, Vigil creator and writer Tom Edge previously confessed to using artistic licence in his telling of the story.

He described the show to Radio Times as “a high octane, twisting and turning contemporary thriller that asks questions about Britain’s place in the world today.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
