Trisha Goddard has been married and divorced three times, but she is utterly devoted to her two children Billie and Madison.
And in one horrifying moment after giving birth to eldest daughter Billie in 1989 by Mark Grieve, Trisha realised the worst could have happened after finding out her first husband Robert Nestdale had recently died from AIDS.
The Australian politician hadn’t told his wife about his disease, leaving Trisha, 63, devastated at the prospect she could have been carrying HIV and accidentally passed it to her newborn baby while breastfeeding.
Trisha, who was 31 at the time, got herself tested as soon as possible, and while her days were consumed with fear as she waited for the result, thankfully it was negative.
Speaking ahead of her appearance on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories next week, the TV presenter said: “I don’t know how I got through it. I was Robert’s wife and yet I didn’t know he had AIDS [the politician told his wife he had lymphoma instead and was secretly gay].
“I remember going for this test and being horrified they might have to take blood from my tiny baby. But then the doctor said that wasn’t necessary because, if I had it and was breastfeeding, she would already have it.
“I’ll never forget this awful feeling, that I might have been passing on the disease through my milk,” Trisha told The Sun.
The star continued to say the whole ordeal was her worst nightmare, and when she finally got the negative result, she “broke down and wept”.
The actress, who now lives in the US, said the “penny dropped” on Robert’s lies after his funeral, where the minister told of how he’d had a “dark side” and a former colleague insisted he hadn’t had cancer.
Speaking about how Robert had worked a lot in African countries, where HIV is a problem, the star recalled fear sweeping over her and that she went “numb”.
Trisha went on to share that despite years of disappointing failed romances, she believes she’s finally found the one.
