Where Moulin Rouge cast are now – bitter divorce, co-star affairs and cancer heartbreak

Moulin Rouge is a star studded film that still sets pulses racing even now, and it was first released in the UK 20 years ago on September 7 2001.

Baz Luhrmann’s musical spectacular divided opinions at the time, mixing Las Vegas showgirl styling with some unusual song choices, but it managed to earn $179 million worldwide at the box office.

Who can forget Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliot, Pink, Mya and Lil’ Kim and their saucy cover version of Lady Marmalade (and the accompanying video) certainly helped to boost the film’s fortunes.

Moulin Rouge brought together the likes of Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Kylie Minogue.

Who knew that the Australian pop princess would be the perfect choice to cameo as a green absinthe fairy?

It might not all make sense on paper, but fans adore the chaos.

Here is what the cast have been up to since singing and dancing their way into the hearts of many, in 2001.

Nicole Kidman

Moulin Rouge was the film that introduced many people to a different side of Nicole Kidman.

The stunning actress divorced her husband Tom Cruise just months after filming finished, on August 8th 2001, after a decade of marriage.

The star was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the sultry Satine. The following year, she won the Best Actress Oscar for The Hours.

Since then she has starred in The Undoing and Big Little Lies on the small screen, and several high profile films including Boy Erased, Bombshell, and The Prom.

Nicole and country singer Keith Urban have now been married for more than 15 years.

She recently credited her successful marriage to love at first sight with Keith, and said she knew within six months that she wanted to be with him for the rest of her life.

They share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 13 and Faith Margaret, 10, and Nicole has two grown up children from her marriage to Tom.

Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor played lovestruck Christian in the film.

Many viewers were surprised by his singing voice in Moulin Rouge and fell in love with the actor all over again.

Like Nicole, he has continued to have a hugely successful career.

He was nominated for an Emmy for his continuing role in Fargo, and will be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Star Wars series.

He also appeared in a live action Beauty and the Beast and Birds Of Prey.

Ewan found himself at the centre of some drama after paparazzi photos came out showing him kissing his Fargo co-star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Ewan later filed for divorce in 2017 from his wife of 22 years, Eve Mavrakis.

The pictures printed on the birthday of one of his four children he shared with Eve.

The move caused his eldest daughter Clara to post on Instagram that Mary was “a piece of trash.”

She later backtracked on her comments, saying there had been “a lot building up to it.”

“I was angry and upset… There had been a lot building up to it and a lot to deal with — not to make excuses or anything — but, yeah, it wasn’t my finest moment.”

Fortunately they all made up eventually, as in June this year Ewan’s daughter’s revealed he and Mary welcomed their first child together, a little boy called Laurie.

Kylie Minogue

In an inspired move, Luhrmann cast pop-princess Kylie Minogue to play The Green Fairy.

Kylie is now the highest-selling Australian artist of all time and has released 15 albums.

She’s no stranger to acting, having made her name in Neighbours.

More recently she has appeared in Galavant and San Andreas.

Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2005, and underwent a lumpectomy and chemo, and she revealed “My view of the world was different, my destination, for the most part, was the same.”

Minogue has now been couples up with British GQ’s Creative Director Paul Solomons since July 2018.

DeObia Oparei

DeObia stole the show as Le Chocolat in Moulin Rouge, but many fans may now recognise him from the roles he has taken on since.

In particular, he plays Eric’s dad in the smash hit TV series Sex Education.

As well as the hugely popular show, also on his CV is Game of Thrones, Jumanji: The Next Level, Santa Clarita Diet, and Dumbo.

That’s not all, he also appeared in films in the Independence Day and Pirates of the Caribbean series.

There’s another big film on the horizon for DeObia too, set to appear in the upcoming The Gray Ma.

He’ll be starring alongside Marvel hero Chris Evans, fan-favourite Ryan Gosling, and Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page.

Jim Broadbent

Jim is a legend of stage and screen, and he starred in Moulin Rouge as Harold Zidler.

He won over a whole new league of fans for his high-profile role playing Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter.

Like DeObia, he also appeared in the hugely successful Game of Thrones.

That’s not all, he also starred in The Iron Lady, Cloud Atlas, the Bridget Jones films, and the Paddington series.

Fans will get to see him acting alongside Maggie Smith again in the upcoming A Boy Called Christmas, an adaptation of Matt Haig’s novel.

John Leguizamo

John Leguizamo starred as Toulouse-Lautrec in the film.

He is currently working on multiple exciting new series including Hypno and The Power.

John appeared in Disney’s smash hit Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian as well as When They See Us.

If he seems familiar, it might be because you saw him in Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean?” music video.

His voice may be even more recognisable than his face though, as he’s voiced the iconic role of adorable Sid in every Ice Age movie!

Richard Roxburgh

Richard starred as the dastardly Duke, the villain of the movie.

He’s been keeping busy since, appearing in The Crown, Hacksaw Ridge, and Van Helsing.

Not content with that, he also spent eight years as the main character on the Australian series Rake.

For forthcoming plans, he will be starring as the father of Elvis Presley in an upcoming film.
