Will Young says he got rid of his BRIT Awards because 'they didn't spark joy'

Will Young has revealed he gave away his BRIT Awards because “they didn’t spark joy”.

The former Pop Idol winner scooped the Best British Breakthrough gong in 2003 and in 2005 he took home the Brit for Best Single for his track Your Game.

But he has now admitted that he didn’t get much pleasure from his two BRITS so he auctioned them off.

Speaking on The One Show during a discussion with Stacey Solomon about de-cluttering, he said: “I did get rid of a lot of awards a few years ago.

“I actually got rid of my BRITS. I auctioned them.

“Things that spark joy but they didn’t spark joy. But my Top Of The Pops awards, they weren’t going anywhere.”

Tuesday’s instalment of The One Show moved to Glasgow to coincide with the COP26 conference.

And Will, 42, shared that he got a very unusual welcome as he arrived in the city.

“I walked out of the train station and a police van, the lights started going and then they were playing music through their loudspeaker and they were playing Leave Right Now, one of my songs,” he said.

“And I thought well that’s a funny way to disperse crowds.”

He went on: “And then I was like, I know that song and it was really sweet so I went over and said hi and they were lovely and I thanked them for keeping the streets safe and everyone safe.”

“It was really sweet,” the star said of his welcome.

In August this year, Will called for BRIT Awards bosses to address the “tricky” issue of gendered categories which exclude non-binary artists.

Organisers said the categories were “under review” in May 2021, after non-binary singer Sam Smith spoke out about their own exclusion, but that wider consultation was needed “to make sure we get it right”.

Will weighed in on the issue on The Independent’s Millennial Love podcast.

“It’s quite difficult that,” he said. “It really is. At present, I profess to ignorance here, I only know of a couple of artists who identify as non-binary in the UK who would be up for BRIT Awards.”

“How much does something move around? How do you reconfigure? I think it would be really difficult to have just one category because less people would win.”

He added: “It’s a tricky one, but you have to respect that. You have to change things around and make it work.”

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm
