Amy Walsh and EastEnders' Toby-Alexander Smith unveil baby daughter's adorable name

Emmderdale actress Amy Walsh and EastEnders actor Toby-Alexander Smith have welcomed their first child Bonnie Mae Smith and admitted they are ‘smitten’ with their new arrival.

The happy couple spoke to OK! about the process, from the labour to the birth and their plans and hopes for the future.

Toby and Amy met on Strictly Come Dancing two years ago, but they found themselves in the crowd rather than competing on the dance floor.

Walsh and Smith were cheering on their pals from the sidelines when they locked eyes and in September 2021 the couple announced their pregnancy news.

The 34-year-old Emmerdale actress gave birth to their daughter on December 27 and the couple said they decided on the name Bonnie way before Amy fell pregnant.

They used to take walks together during lockdown and discuss the topic. The couple agreed that when she arrived, their daughter suited her name perfectly and ‘couldn’t be more of a Bonnie’.

Amy, who plays Tracy Metclafe in Emmerdale, was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome when she was just 20 years old.

The condition can make it harder for sufferers to get pregnant so their daughter has made the pair feel ‘incredibly lucky’.

Toby spoke about how their daughter has brought them closer together: “We’ve always been a really good team anyway and I think Bonnie coming along has shown that we’re meant to be parents together because we’re finding our roles.”

The doting dad also said that Bonnie had ‘exceeded every expectation imaginable’ and that they were ‘totally smitten’ with her. Amy added that they both ‘look at her a cry’ with joy.

Amy’s sisters, Sally and Girls Aloud singer Kimberly Walsh were on standby with some advice for the new mum: “Both my sisters said to trust your journey and ask for what you need, don’t try to be a hero.”

Walsh endured a 20-hour labour aided by two epidurals but the struggles still continued after the birth.

Bonnie was tongue tied, a condition in which a piece of tissue connects the tip of the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, and needed encouragement from a breastfeeding specialist.

Toby also admitted that he hasn’t spent much time around babies before, meaning that navigating their new life together will be a ‘whole new world’.

Despite this, Toby is reportedly doing a fantastic job by helping out around the house, doing the chores and allowing Amy to have some much needed time to herself.
