Derry Girls viewers were left completely gobsmacked after one Hollywood icon made a cameo appearance during the premiere of the Channel 4 hit show.
The beloved Irish comedy series returned to our screens with a bang on Tuesday (April 12) after the highly-anticipated final series aired their first episode.
And it’s fair to say fans were overwhelmed to see their favourite characters return to the silver screen after three years off the air.
Viewers welcomed back fan favourites Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James on the popular comedy series but there was one familiar face fans were not expecting to see.
With the final series already set up as one we will never forget; one thing fans could never have predicted was who the producers cast as the police constable.
The whole country was left in utter shock when out of the darkness in “Londonderry RUC Station” appeared none other than Hollywood A-lister Liam Neeson who was tasked to question the group after they were caught breaking into the school.
Luckily, the group called on their Uncle Colm as their “responsible adult” to pull them out of trouble as they sat waiting behind bars for their rescue.
As they watched the show, fans flooded to Twitter to share their shock at the Taken star on social media.
One user penned: “Watching #DerryGirls on +1. Loving Liam Neeson being in it!! So good! @saoirsejackson @siobhni.”
Another added: “Well that was a great start to #DerryGirls season 3 [three cry laughing emojis]. Love, love, love Kevin McAleer, not sure how Liam Neeson kept a straight face? And a serial killer on the loose RIP Fluffy 10.10 for episode 1.”
A third penned: “#DerryGirls was on point tonight. Funny, and Liam Neeson’s cameo was [fire emoji].”
It comes after the writer and creator Lisa McGee and director Michael Lennox shared their experience of working with the blockbuster star last wee.
After the premiere of the third series last week, the creators took part in a Q&A where Michael confessed how he was taken aback by “the voice” on the other end of the call.
Lisa went on to explain how they had been using nicknames to disguise the identity of their mystery guest star to ensure it would be a major surprise for the audience when the first episode aired.
She joked about the experience being “really, really scary” and hiding from Liam Neeson on set until she said, “He called for me.”
