Doc Martin’s boss has revealed how a major character in the popular drama was almost ditched in its first series as fans signalled their sadness as the show ended after 18 years.
The ITV show’s last episode was on Christmas Day and saw Doc – played by Martin Clunes – and his wife Louisa, acted by Caroline Catz, celebrate Christmas with the residents of Port Wenn and telling each other they loved one another.
However, in last night’s (Thursday’s) Farewell documentary, show chief Philippa Braithwaite revealed the couple were never supposed to be a major factor in the series.

Philippa, who is married to Martin in real life, admitted Louisa wasn’t greatly on the production team’s radar during the first series back in 2004.
After a clip of their first scene together was shown, Philippa said: “We didn’t really think she was going to be a big love interest particularly, we just put ‘a possible love interest’ in there,” adding: “Had no idea it was going to become what it became.”
After seeing the chemistry between Martin and Caroline, the show’s creators made their romance a major point of the series, with the on-screen, on-off couple ending up having two children together.

Sitting beside Martin, Caroline said: “There was an instant attraction/aversion thing going on wasn’t there,” adding: “But they were both very interested in one another.”
One fan of the series wrote on Twitter: “Going to miss this series so much!” Another added: ” Last one ever!”
A third commented: “Going to miss #docmartin. Brilliant cast and storylines.”
