EastEnders paid a heartfelt tribute to actress June Brown after it was announced on Monday (April 4) that the actress had died at the age of 95.
June has iconically played the role of Dot Cotton on the BBC soap for an astounding 35 years after first gracing screens as the laundrette manageress back in 1985.
Wanting to give thanks to her decades of service, the channel offered up an emotional black and white snap with the words: “In loving memory of June Brown OBE, MBE, 1927 – 2022.”
Many fans agreed that EastEnders did the Dot Cotton legend proud with the honorary statement at the end of the programme, while others were left in tears.
On Twitter one fan chimed: “Such a lovely episode and perfect tribute to June @bbceastenders #EastEnders #JuneBrown #DotCotton.”
Another added: “I just love how they paid tribute to June. I’m still sad that the last of the original cast has gone forever. #EastEnders.”
A third said: “Beautiful tribute to the legendary June Brown R.I.P sleep tight you beautiful angel #EastEnders.”
“As soon as the credits rolled without a cut screen for what’s coming next, I knew we’d get this,” said a fourth person along with a crying emoji face.
While a fifth echoed: “The June bit at the end #EastEnders,” with a tearful emoji too.
The BBC confirmed the tragic news that June had sadly passed away earlier today, their statement read: “There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.
“June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances created some of EastEnders finest moments.”
The Eastenders spokesperson signed off with: “We send all our love and deepest sympathies to June’s family and friends.
“A very bright light has gone out at EastEnders today but we shall all be raising a sweet sherry in June’s memory.
“Rest in peace, our dearest June. You will never be forgotten.”
The Brown’s family also issued a statement, they said: “We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side.
“We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”
