“I think the audience have seen that and have been investing in their ups and downs over the years.

“Given where they’ve been – they’ve been at the very worst place so I’m hoping they have a strong future but you just never know.

” I think they’re going to continue to find life hard because of where they’re at, but they’ve got each other and they’re really really good with each other.

“They’ve found what they’ve been looking for. I think it’s a game changer because I think if if he hadn’t had Rhona then I’m not sure he would’ve made it.”

Marlon and Rhona (Zoe Henry) also picked up the gong for Best Romance.

Speaking about their epic win Mark said: “There was a different route to it.

“It was a romance born out of actual tragedy. What’s fascinating about getting that award is the audience have seen that it’s not a normal romance.

“It’s a romance where one woman is trying to prop her man up, quite literally as well as figuratively, and try and nurse him back to himself.

“Once he’s had the stroke he’s like an outline and she’s helping him sketch himself back in.

“The audience have seen her commitment to him and Zoe’s so good at that. It’s a big testament to her performance.”
