Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway wasn’t impressed with Prince Harry during Friday’s instalment of the morning programme, as she hit out at his numerous “excuses” surrounding an ongoing job row.
It comes after the Duke of Sussex appeared at a virtual conference alongside Serena Williams, BetterUp CEO Alexi Robichaux and his wife Meghan Markle to discuss the demands of the current job industry.
Previously criticised for being out of touch with his comments – which included advising people to quit their jobs to prioritise mental health – Harry couldn’t resist suggesting employers should give workers time out to “focus on themselves”.
He explained during the event: “From an employer perspective, you can’t expect your people to put in the work on themselves when you’re not giving them the time to do that.”
Harry explained he had suffered “burn out” before and emphasised the importance of “taking time for inner work”.
And Kate was simply having none of it, as the presenters discussed the upcoming BAFTAs – with the nominations already in.
Kate and Ben suggested a whole new category of awards should be created for outstanding actors like Olivia Coleman, with Ben suggesting: “Do they need to create another level of awards for…”
“The Olivia Coleman award,” entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold suggested.
Ben asked: “Who else would go in there?” as Kate replied: “Dame Judi [Dench]!”
Which is when she couldn’t resist slipping in a dig at Prince Harry, as she said: “Well there’s another excuse – from Prince Harry this morning we’ve got ‘we’re too busy on our inner work to do the outer work’, and we’re too talented for awards, Richard!”
Richard griped: “I’ve had no inner work for quite some time.”
Harry has been incredibly vocal about his views on working life after stepping back from his role as a senior royal, and when discussing the exodus of people resigning from their jobs amid the pandemic had the following to say.
“I’ve actually discovered recently, courtesy of a chat with [BetterUp science board member] Adam Grant, that a lot of the job resignations you mention aren’t all bad.
“In fact, it is a sign that with self-awareness comes the need for change.
“Many people around the world have been stuck in jobs that didn’t bring them joy, and now they’re putting their mental health and happiness first. This is something to be celebrated,” he explained.
GMB airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
