Helena Bonham-Carter's life – odd living arrangements, divorce and rarely seen kids

Helena Bonham-Carter has made a name for herself over the years playing unconventional and eccentric characters.

But she has also spoken about her unusual living situation from when she was in a relationship with American director and longtime partner, Tim Burton.

The couple famously lived in adjoining houses in Belsize Park – Helena owned one of the houses, with Tim buying the other later on and they connected the two together.

The star’s film, TV and theatre credits span across 37 years, with her first TV role being in A Pattern of Roses in 1983.

Since then she has gone on to take leading roles in countless films and series, including 2020’s Enola Homes, The Harry Potter film series, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

As the former partner of director and producer, Tim Burton, Carter took many lead roles in Burton’s films, although she admitted she had to go through the same audition process as other candidates before landing the roles.

The star, who was born in London, is the daughter of Raymond Bonham Carter – a British banker who came from a well-known political background.

He represented the Bank of England during the 1960s, as part of the International Monetary Fund organisation.

Her mother, Elena, is a psychotherapist and she is of Jewish background. Elena’s father, Eduardo Propper de Callejón, who is Bonham Carter’s maternal grandfather, was a Spanish diplomat who was known to have helped thousands of Jews escape from France during the Second World War.

Her mother, and Bonham Carter’s maternal grandmother, was a painter called Baroness Hélène Fould-Springer.

Bonham Carter’s paternal grandmother was Violet Bonham Carter, a feminist and politician who was the daughter of Herbert Henry Asquith – the Prime Minister of the UK during the start of the First World War.

The actress is now a mother-of-two, and she had her children – Billy Raymond Burton and Nell Burton.

The couple’s first child Billy Raymond Burton Born in October 4, 2003. The choice of name was very special. In fact, when the two found out that they were expecting their first child together, they were convinced it was a girl.

When they find out, however, that it was a boy, the parents find themselves at a loss, especially in name selection. For this reason, the child remained nameless for the first month of his life, until his parents decided to call him Billy Raymond.

Before Burton, she had been in a relationship with director Kenneth Branagh – and they were together from 1994 until 1999.

Her relationship with Burton lasted from 2001 until 2014, and she is now in a relationship with Norwegian author Rye Dag Holmboe.

The pair had met at a wedding, and they had kept their relationship private until their first red carpet event together in 2019.

Bonham Carter has stated that Nell is named after all the “Helens” in her family. She has talked of her struggles with infertility and the difficulties she had during her pregnancies.

She said that before the conception of her daughter, she and Burton had been trying for a baby for two years and, although they conceived naturally, they were considering in vitro fertilisation.
