ITV viewers in awe as King Charles offers 'olive branch' to Harry and Meghan in speech

Fans have praised King Charles for mentioning his son Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle in his first speech to the nation following the Queen’s death.

The highly anticipated speech was pre-recorded from the monarch and televised to ITV viewers at 6pm on Friday (Sept 9).

Discussing the changes that will be taking place in the Royal Family, with son Prince William and wife Kate now taking on the roles of Prince and Princess of Wales, the father of two also spoke highly of his son Harry.

The King said: “I want to also express my love to Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

King Charles was praised for mentioning Harry and Meghan

Hearing his affectionate words, fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts, while praising him for his stance.

One social media user wrote: “King Charles looks so sad but a lovely speech which included the biggest olive branch to Harry and Meghan possible – hopefully it helps to draw a line in the mud slinging for everyone’s sake.”

Another penned: “His Majesty, His Royal Highness, King Charles the 3rd in his 1st ever televised speech publicly declared HRH Prince William the title of Prince of Wales & Kate now has the title that Diana held HRH The Princess of Wales. Was nice to see him publicly acknowledging Harry & Meghan.”

While a third echoed: “Heartfelt words from King Charles III, welcoming us into his new world, with his darling wife Camilla, newly titled heir and sending love to Harry and Meghan.”

However some viewers were also quick to notice that both Harry and Meghan’s titles were not mentioned at all in the poignant speech.

Jumping onto Twitter again, one person said: “In King Charles speech he mentions Harry & Meghan, no Duke & Duchess of Sussex. I think we all know what that means – titles rescinded.”

Meanwhile another shared: “Well King Charles just promote to Prince William and Catherine the title of Prince and Princess of Wales and NO titles for Harry and Meghan whoops.”

On Thursday, September 8 the UK’s longest-serving monarch, died at Balmoral aged 96, after a 70-year reign.

Sharing his thoughts on his mother’s death, King Charles previously said: “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.

“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
