The daytime classic TV show Neighbours is set to come to a sad end soon, having catapulted the careers of stars we know and love today including Margot Robbie.
Like many celebrities, including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, Neighbours was a great platform for young Australian talent to blossom into some of the world’s biggest actors.
Russell Crowe, Chris Hemsworth and Hollywood favourite Margot are all big-screen stars that began their acting careers on the Ramsay Street TV show, which will now be axed.
The start of their careers is a world away from where they are now, Margot herself went from living in a “crack den of an apartment” to blowing audiences away in The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
So what was life like back then for one of Australia’s best-known acting talents?
Who did Margot Robbie play in Neighbours?
Margot Robbie played Donna Freedman from 2008 until 2011 and we initially saw her as a teenager obsessed with Ty Harper.
A Neighbours fan site described the character as “lonely, needy and somewhat deluded”.
They said: “Teenager Donna Freedman filled a lot of her spare time avoiding her warring parents at home, instead developing obsessions with various musicians.”
Donna’s bisexuality was perceived to be good progress for the show and was a step in the right direction.
As a fan favourite that won numerous awards, Donna even had her own Twitter account set up in 2009 along with the most popular people on the show at the time.
Margot Robbie’s life on Neighbours and Wolf of Wall Street star’s net worth
Neighbours helped Margot Robbie rise to fame in Australia before she left to pursue her career in America.
People assumed that Margot, who according to celebrity Net Worth is believed to have around £19 million to her name, was living well when she was a Ramsay Street regular.
As reported on Yahoo, she later said of her time on the show: “At 18, people would approach me and be all like, ‘You’re that chick from ‘Neighbours’, do you own six houses or something?’ In reality I was living in an absolute crack den of an apartment with a fridge and a mattress on the floor.”
Donna became one of the show’s most popular characters at the time and it was later revealed that the show runner’s decided not to kill her off in case Robbie’s career in America – which she left the show for – didn’t quite work out.
She told Digital Spy: “I told them I was going to move to America and then I asked if they would kill me off in like a really big dramatic way.
“They said no because, you know, ‘If things don’t work out in America, we want you to be able to come back and play the role again’.”
She also spoke of her time on the show as an important experience for her acting career.
The Suicide Squad actress explained: “You have to be word-perfect, and they’re switching as you act, so if you don’t hit your mark, or if you aren’t word-perfect, and they’re shooting it so quickly, there’s really no time to mess up,” she explained.
“You just learn an incredible discipline and you can work really, really fast.
