Comedian Matt Lucas took a cheeky swipe at Harry potter author J.K Rowling and Little Britain co-star David Walliams during the latest episode of BBC The One Show as he promoted his new children’s book.
The Little Britain star joined Harry Judd and Alex Jones on the famous sofa on Thursday night to promote World Book Day.
However, fans were distracted when the 47-year-old comic appeared to make a dig at the controversial writer after a schoolgirl chose her as her favourite author.
“Do you have a favourite book?” asked Matt to a pupil at Edward Wilson Primary in West London.
Replying: “Probably J.K Rowling books,” fans noticed Matt pull a distinctly unimpressed face.
He went on to cheekily reveal that he had “no idea” who Britain’s Got Talent judge and his Little Britain partner David is.
Matt’s cheeky digs didn’t go unnoticed by viewers at home.
Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: “Did @RealMattLucas just throw shade at JK Rowling on the One Show!? #TransRightsAreHumanRights #mattlucas #oneshow.”
Another added: “Matt Lucas’s reaction to a pupil on The One Show saying she read J.K.Rowling…” followed by a meme of Matt’s Little Britain character Vicky Pollard saying ‘oh my god I can’t believe you just said that.”
Trans activists came down on JK Rowling back in 2019 when she replied to an article with the headline: “Opinion: Creating a more equal post Covid-19 world for people who menstruate.”
She tweeted: “‘People who menstruate’. I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
Several people hit back to point out it was not only women born women who menstruate.
In July 2021, she claimed she was still receiving backlash, and even death threats, from her comments.
Her remarks led criticism from Potter actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Eddie Redmayne.
She was also blasted in 2019 for backing a researcher who was fired for tweeting “men cannot change into women.”
Rowling, who is said to be worth hundreds of millions, responded: “My life has been shaped by being female.
“I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”
Self-confessed bookworm Matt was promoting the release of his new book My Very Very Very Very Very Silly Book of True or False after highlighting new research that suggests that the disruption to the school year caused by the pandemic has held back many children’s reading by as much as months.
He explained:“Reading a book is so intimate and you have a relationship with that writer.
“Reading also inspired children to be creative in their own right.”
The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm
