The teaser trailer for the Marilyn Monroe biopic, Blonde, has been released by Netflix – and the film has a rare rating.
Director Andrew Dominik is bringing the inner life of one of Hollywood’s most legendary icons to the big screen, with Ana de Armas, 34, taking on the titular role.
It’s been confirmed that the upcoming drama will be Netflix’s first original film with an NC-17 rating, meaning it’s not suitable for viewers under the age of 17 (likely 18 in the UK).
Dominik, 54, previously explained that the age rating didn’t come as a surprise due to the film’s sexual content.
“It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f***ing audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office,” he told Screen Daily.
The director added: “It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe.”
Based on the 2000’s novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, the film explores the intricate details of the blonde bombshell’s life and “boldly reimagines” the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons.
The James Bond star shared several stills from the movie on her Instagram with the caption, “BLONDE. What a beautiful dream!”
She added: “Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start — to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens. He wanted the world to experience what it actually felt like to not only be Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen.”
The Knives Out actress has already received stellar praise for her performance as the movie goddess, including Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis who gushed: “I dropped to the floor. I couldn’t believe it. Ana was completely gone. She was Marilyn.”
Discussing how she got into the role of the iconic sex symbol, the Cuban actress said: “It wasn’t just about transforming physically to look the part, it was about understanding her emotional life, how intelligent she was, and how fragile.”
Blonde is set for release later this year on September 23.
