Shocking images released by Los Angeles police on Wednesday show of a replica handgun equipped with a knife blade that was used to attack comedian Dave Chappelle.
The knife is seen attached to the barrel of a gun, similar to a bayonet. The gun was a replica but the knife was real and deadly.
A 23-year-old man carrying the weapon ran onstage and tackled Dave Chappelle during the comedian’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl late Tuesday, apparently evading several layers of security.
“An arrest has been made in an incident where a comedian was attacked while onstage at the Hollywood Bowl,” read a tweet from the police department’s official Twitter account.
Isaiah Lee was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail.
The attacker was reportedly subjected to punches and kicks from 10 members of Chappelle’s security once he was caught and tackled to the ground.
Footage later showed the suspect being treated by paramedics for a broken arm before he was whisked away to the hospital after the incident at LA’s Hollywood Bowl.
Chappelle claimed to have stomped on the man, reportedly boasting: “I’ve always wanted to do that.”
Actor Jamie Foxx, who was watching the show from the wings, also helped apprehend the attacker.
Chappelle, who wasn’t injured, said: “Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat.”
Foxx reportedly said: “I thought that was part of the show.”
He added: “Listen, I just want to say…this man is an absolute genius. We’ve got to make sure we protect him at all times.
“For every comedian who comes out here, this means everything. You’re a genius. You’re a legend, and we’re not going to let nothing happen to you.”
Funnyman Chris Rock cracked a joke after the shocking incident – asking if the attacker was Will Smith.
In a statement, Chappelle’s publicist, Carla Sims, said the comedian refuses to let the attack “overshadow” the Hollywood Bowl sets.
“Dave Chappelle celebrated four nights of comedy and music, setting record-breaking sales for a comedian at the Hollywood Bowl.
“This run ties Chappelle with Monty Python for the most headlined shows by any comedian at the Hollywood Bowl, reaching 70k fans of diverse backgrounds during the first Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival, and he refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment.”
