“I’m always chatting to them all. I’m sure they understand, especially the alpacas.

“I say ‘How are you girls?’. They give me a look and I’ll say, ‘Oh, it’s like that, is it?’. When other people are around they wonder who I’m talking to!”

Paul has more than 35 pets at his home, but he isn’t ruling out getting more.

When he films his ITV series For The Love of Dogs he often meets stray animals and keeps agreeing to take them in.

He said: “I can’t help it. I’m a sucker. I see a little dog with epilepsy and I go, ‘I’ll have her’. I spend a fortune on tablets for them all.

“I just like animals. So am I going to stop? Am I hell!”

For The Love of Dogs is nominated in the Factual Entertainment at this year’s National Television Awards.

He may have more time now to spend with his furry friends after quitting his BBC Radio 2 show after 14 years last month.

The longtime comedian presented the Sunday afternoon slot from 5pm until 7pm on the station.

However, he decided to permanently step down from his show.

Paul reflected on his time at the station in a poignant statement as he said: “I’ve loved doing my Sunday afternoon show for the last 14 years and I’m going to miss my listeners as well as the fun I’ve had with my producer Malcolm Prince, but I feel that now is the right time to go.”

He originally launched his weekly show in the afternoon weekend timeslot back in 2009.

The TV personality was also popular with listeners for hosting his Christmas Day special on the network which featured messages and dedications from listeners all over the world, as well as an eclectic seasonal playlist.
