When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement in 2017, everything about their relationship within the royal Family seemed ideal.
The pair would go on to fall out with ‘the firm’, and they eventually decided to step away from their royal duties and move abroad.
Harry and Meghan revealed their reasons behind the decision to leave the UK and step away from royal duties in an interview with US TV star Oprah Winfrey that left viewers shocked and outraged.
The interview split opinions, some showing sympathy for the difficult issue of mental health struggles suffered by Meghan. Others were perplexed to see why the two decided to take part in the interview as it could damage the reputation of the Queen.
Despite the interview, speculation over why they left for the US has continued, including one commentator’s opinion on a photo released by the Royals.
So why did Harry and Meghan quit the UK?
What was the Prince George picture commentators referred to?
At the start of 2020, the royals released a photo of the Queen alongside Prince Charles, William and George, the next royals in line to take the throne.
Now one royal commentator claims a photo also made the Duke and Duchess of Sussex consider their positions.
Royal commentator Neil Sean said on his YouTube channel: “We have Prince Charles, Prince George, and of course Her Majesty the Queen. And this was going to be showing, alongside William, where the next phase is.”
Sean said focus will mainly be on these three royals in the future, rather than Harry and Meghan, and may have been seen as an opportunity to move away.
“Well of course, if you look at the picture, it makes perfect sense. Obviously that is the next line-up.”
“Harry and Meghan had decided more or less within the first few months of meeting that they could have a different life,” he continues.
“It wasn’t exactly mapped out word for word, what we’ve ended up with, but certainly for Prince Harry, he wanted to have a different role in his life.”
Why did Harry and Meghan quit Britain?
During the Oprah interview, Harry and Meghan revealed a number of reasons behind their departure from the royal family. This included the impact the press had on Meghan’s mental health, racism in the media and also a conversation, alleged to have happened, in which the colour of son Archie’s skin was discussed.
The eventual reason the pair gave for their exit was “lack of support and lack of understanding” from other British royals.
A traumatic event during Harry’s childhood occurred in 1997 when his mother Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.
Anger at the time was directed towards the paparazzi, who had devoted a lot of attention to Diana.
Harry spoke of his anger over this in a 2017 BBC documentary as he alleged that paparazzi had taken pictures of her as she lay dying in the back seat of the crashed car.
In 2008, an inquest jury ruled she had been unlawfully killed by driver Henri Paul and the paparazzi believed to have been chasing her at the time.
He said: “One of the hardest things to come to terms with is the people who chased her into the tunnel were the same people who were taking photographs of her while she was still dying on the back seat of the car.”
With Meghan’s mental health declining, a move away from the UK is believed to be what Harry deemed to be the safest bet for her.
