BBC Breakfast guest calls out Charlie Stayt over use of word ‘deformities’

BBC Breakfast guest Jono Lancaster called our host Charlie Stayt on his use of the word “deformities”, quickly correcting him with more acceptable language.

Charlie and his co-host Naga Munchetty welcomed author and campaigner Jono onto the BBC morning show to discuss his new book. Jono, who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, released his book Not All Heroes Wear Capes in July.

Jono, 38, had a difficult childhood after he was born with the condition, which affects the facial structure. He was abandoned at hospital by his birth parents.

Charlie and Naga spoke to Jono about his life, with Charlie mentioning the work he’d done to try and help people with “deformities”. But Jono was quick to correct him.

The motivational speaker said: “We use the word visible difference, rather than a deformity. One for the future, there.”

However Charlie confessed he was thankful that Jono had pulled him up on his language. He said: “I’m happy to be corrected there. Language, as you’ll know better than me, matters a lot.”

Jono had told Charlie and Naga about his “imposter syndrome” after people had been sharing photos of themselves with his book which they’d received for Christmas. He also explained he “struggled to deal” with seeing other people go through struggles.

“I’m a feeler and I want to support people,” he explained. Jono said that he had to make sure he was able to “manage” those feelings himself.

He added: “When I travel or meet individuals, there’s nothing that fills my cup up more than appreciation.” And he’s certainly appreciated by many, including his 302,000 Instagram followers.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One
