BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty praised by fans for ‘knockout blow’ during tense interview

BBC Breakfast fans were full of praise after Naga Munchetty’s tense chat with education minister Robert Halfon.

The presenter, 48, resumed her spot on the red sofa alongside regular co-host Charlie Stayt on Friday (July 7), sharing the top news headlines of the day with viewers across the country.

This included that nurseries in England are set to receive additional funding as part of the governments policy to deliver the largest ever investment in childcare.

Naga revealed the sector is already underfunded, with 400 nursery providers closing their doors last year alone.

During her interview with the Tory MP, the BBC Radio 5 host noted that the six per cent increase on funding won’t ease the pressure on three and four-year-olds and their parents.

As the 54-year-old attempted to dodge the specific question, Naga interjected: “I’m just referring to the £1.8billion shortfall for three and four-year-olds.”

The MP continued: “Well the money that we’ve set out we believe will fund this new childcare provision. It’s billions of pounds…”

The BBC star interrupted: “No no no, sorry I’ve given you the opportunity to talk about billions of pounds. I’m talking specifically about three and four-year-olds and the £1.8billion shortfall there. How is that going to be addressed?”

The MP responded: “You’re dismissing the billions,” adding: “If you look at the overall package given the economic circumstances, it’s one of the biggest packages that’s ever been offered to help families with childcare.”

“I didn’t dismiss the amount that you said, the billions,” Naga insisted. “What I said was that there is a sector that is not being fully funded, that’s what I was referring to. But you’ve answered that question as you wished.”

Viewers at home were quick to throw their support behind the presenter following her approach to the “car crash” interview.

One fan shared: “Naga delivering a knockout blow to dithering Tory Robert Halfon. She’s all over him. Another car crash interview for the Tories. He’s normally one of their better performers.”

“This is a car crash interview ,well done Naga. Again a minister not answering the facts,” penned another viewer.

A third person wrote: “#NagaMunchetty grilling another incompetent #Tory #Government Minister, over funding for 3-4 year olds #childcare! He’ll be looking forward to his holidays!”

While someone else echoed: “Go on Naga, brilliant work. You’ve answered that question as you want, superb response to yet another inept government minister.”
