Huw Edwards has been named as the BBC presenter accused of paying a teenager more than £35,000 for sexually explicit photographs – but social media users are convinced many famous faces already knew.
The 61-year-old broadcaster was identified by his wife, Vicky Flint, in a statement released on Wednesday (July 12).
In the lengthy message, Edwards’ spouse says he’s suffering from “serious mental health issues”.

After days of media coverage, and a frenzied speculation online over his identity, both Metropolitan Police and South Wales Police have confirmed that there was no evidence of a crime being committed and are not taking any further action.
As Edwards remains suspended while the BBC continues to investigate, Daily Star has a taken a look at the clues from fans which suggest some television stars may have known about the star’s identity before it was confirmed.
BBC star’s slip-up
Victoria Derbyshire suffered an on-air slip-up on Newsnight days before Edwards’ identity was made public.
Explaining why the BBC was choosing to not yet name the presenter, she said: “We do know that the BBC is in the middle of another crisis and big questions are being asked again about who – who knew what, when, and why the corporation is on the back foot.”
The journalist repeating the word “who” twice and even stumbled on it, making it sound like “Huw” before quickly correcting herself, which led viewers to speculate about Edwards’ alleged involvement in the BBC presenter scandal.
Fans ran with it on social media, with many suggesting it was obvious what was going on behind the scenes.
‘We all know who it is’
Piers Morgan called the BBC presenter to “come forward” if he has “nothing to hide” on his TalkTV show Uncensored.
The former Good Morning Britain host said live on air: “The presenter concerned, we all know who it is.
“The public doesn’t know who it is yet. Would it be prudent for this presenter to come out if he has nothing to hide?
“Would it not be the smart thing to do for this presenter to come out and talk frankly about this?
“And maybe not even defend himself but say, ‘This is what happened and I have nothing to hide’.”
Hidden investigation
BBC journalists were reportedly looking into the behaviour of Edwards before the alleged sex images scandal was made public.
Hours after the News At Ten broadcaster was named as the man at the centre of the allegations, Newsnight reported new claims from one current and one former BBC worker, who said they had received “inappropriate messages” from Edwards.
Both claimed there was “a reluctance among junior staff to complain to managers about the conduct of high-profile colleagues in case it adversely affected their careers,” the programme said.
A BBC source confirmed to the Mirror that Newsnight colleagues were looking into the alleged conduct of Edwards at work prior to The Sun story last week about sex photos and his alleged relationship with a teenager.
However, the insider played down reports it was a full-scale investigation.
