Coronation Street have hit out at a “crazy” storyline involving Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell).
Young Joseph Brown (William Flanagan) collapsed at home in recent scenes and was taken to hospital where it was revealed that he had something poisonous in his system. He was let out of hospital but chid protection officer wanted to chat to Gemma and said she needed to be interviewed.
Caitlin questioned Gemma and suggested that she may have poisoned Joseph on purpose. She later told the worried mum that she won’t be able to see her children unsupervised or live under the same house as them until the investigation is completed. The decision left fans of the ITV soap fuming.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “This Gemma storyline is crazy! Seems a bit off. Hope this isn’t the direction they’re sending Gemma. She’s a great character.” Another added: “Scriptwriters!!! This Joseph/Gemma storyline is not one that you needed to air “at this time”. A third person agreed: “Absolutely stupid storyline for Gemma! What a way to promote social services! What a missed opportunity! Ridiculous!”
Things are set to get worse for the Winter-Brown clan as Gemma’s mum Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) finds out her fate. She’s sentenced to three months behind bars and is told she has to serve at least half. A furious Gemma later lures Big Garth (Victor McGuire) to Victoria Street.
Back at No 5 Joseph Brown (William Flanagan) complains of a headache. As Gemma finds some painkillers, she hears a knock at the door. She’s taken aback to find it’s Caitlin. As Caitlin takes in the scene, she’s deeply unimpressed. Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) calls at the flower shop flat, apologises to Gemma for having a go at her and tells her how much he loves her. Gemma dissolves into tears and hugs him tightly. She is worried when he says Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard) is coming to stay.
Bernie found herself involved in drama when she got arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. As fans will recall, she was trying to quickly sell some stolen items with her dodgy pal Big Garth. Bernie turned to crime to make some quick cash in a bid to help out her son Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), who is currently battling with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and last week, he found out he had just six to 12 months to live.
In court, Bernie pleaded guilty. However, the judge revealed that because of her criminal record, she is likely to be sentenced to time behind bars. She then had to share the heartbreaking news with Paul and Gemma that she could be jailed for as much as six months. Understandably, her kids were devastated. How will the react to the prison sentence?
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm
