Dan Walker pays tribute to former BBC colleague George Alagiah after tragic death

Dan Walker has led tributes to BBC newsreader George Alagiah OBE following his tragic death aged 67.

It was announced on Monday (July 24) that George had sadly lost his battle with stage four bowel cancer, his agent confirmed the heartbreaking news.

In a statement, Mary Greenham explained that the much loved BBC star had died “peacefully” while being surrounded by loved ones.

It also read: “George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being.

“My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family.”

Former BBC Breakfast host Dan took to his Instagram page hours after the announcement to share a touching tribute to his late colleague.

He penned: “How sad to hear about the death of George Alagiah. Incredibly well respected and loved both inside and outside the BBC.

“I hope his family know he inspired a lot of people with his courage.”

Fans rushed to support Dan in the comment section following the heartbreaking news after shared their own tributes.

One fan penned: “Well said Dan. Clive Myrie’s tribute on the 1 o’clock news was also very touching.George was a true giant of his profession.”

Another added: “Very sad news. Seemed a lovely man on TV and had a warm presence.”

A third person posted: “Really sorry to hear the news of George’s passing, he seemed like such a lovely man and we really enjoyed watching him on the BBC news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”

While a fourth social media user said: “Beautiful post Dan, sad day.”

Naga Munchetty was hosting her BBC 5 Live radio show when she learned about George’s passing.

Trying to keep it together live on-air, she told listeners: “We’ve had the very sad news that our colleague George Alagiah, BBC presenter – you all know him – who has been living with bowel cancer since 2014.

Fighting back tears, Naga continued: “Apologies for the emotion in my voice – he was so loved in our news room.

“We’ve had that news, we’ll bring you more a little bit later, Rebecca apologies for the interruption, you have the rest of the sport.”
