EastEnders fans haven’t seen Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell since the tragic events that unfolded on New Year’s Day in 2017.
The sisters, played by Samantha Womack and Rita Simons, made their first appearance on the BBC soap in 2007 when they arrived for their cousin, Phil Mitchell’s wedding.
After a decade in Walford, the iconic duo met a devastating end on the same day Ronnie exchanged vows with Jack Branning.

The explosive episode saw a drunk Roxy, who had recently turned to substance abuse, decide to take a late-night dip in the pool before she began to struggle.
In an attempt to save her sister, Ronnie then threw herself into the water while wearing her wedding dress and veil.
The newlywed began to struggle against the material and viewers heard a haunting scream as she began to drown.
The heartbreaking scene ended with the sisters motionless in the water, floating side by side as they passed away.
Six years on, fans have been speculating how the fan-favourite characters could return to the soap, and Daily Star has rounded up all the theories.
Faked own death
Ronnie and Roxy faking their own death wouldn’t be the first time this has been done on EastEnders.
Fans will remember Dirty Den “dying” after being shot, however, the former Queen Vic landlord reappeared in 2003 after it turned out he had been living in Spain.
Similarly, Kathy Beale was killed in a road collision in 2006, however, she returned alive and well nearly a decade later in 2015.
Many fans have suggested that Ronnie and Roxy have followed a similar pattern and are actually alive and living in Ibiza.
Taking to social media with their theories, one viewer penned: “6 years since Ronnie and Roxy fake their death to move to Ibiza. Hope their still living thier best lifes. Miss them both!!”
“I have a new theory. Since Glenda admitted in the #EastEnders throwback ep she likes the finer things in life, her, Ronnie and Roxy made a plan to fake Ronnie and Roxie’s death so they could all move back to Ibiza and Glenda could have her life of luxury back,” echoed a second.
Another wrote: “Shock twist. Ronnie and Roxy fake their deaths and lead us all on”.
While a fourth added: “Saw someone comment a while back that a way to get around it would be to say they faked their death to get away from a dealer or something, personally I’d go for it, anything to get Ronnie and Roxy back.”
Flashback
In September last year, EastEnders aired a special flashback episode which focused on the Mitchell family during economic turmoil in Britain.
Viewers were transported back to 1979 and were met with several familiar characters, including Mitchell matriarch Peggy and her sons Phil and Grant.
A young Billy was also present alongside his brother Charlie as well as their father, Stephen.
Fans were also treated to childhood versions of Ronnie and Roxy in the one-off episode.
This means there’s every chance the characters could return if the soap chooses to do another flashback.
Supporting this theory, one fan wrote: “They should do a flashback spinoff with Ronnie and Roxy in Ibiza before they came to the square!”
Another begged: “That was brilliant, and the casting was on point. Now give us the flashback of Ronnie and Roxy faking their death!”
Ghosts
There have been many occasions in soaps when deceased characters have returned in some form.
Weeks after his death in 2016, Patrick Blake returned to Hollyoaks when Maxine Minniver momentarily saw him as a figment of her imagination.
Meanwhile, Home and Away star Esther Anderson reprised her role as Charlie Buckton one year after her character was murdered, helping ex-boyfriend Daryl Braxton return to the living after he fell into a coma in 2013.
If other soaps can do it, this means EastEnders certainly can.
Commenting on the idea, fans suggested the ghost of Roxy could return to tie in with her daughter, Amy’s self-harming storyline.
As they speculated the return, one fan theorised: “She could do – With Amy going through all her stuff, there’s no reason she couldn’t appear in a dream or a hallucination with her.”
Another agreed: “That’s an idea! That’s really the only way we could ever realistically see her again.”
Actress hints
In 2022, Samantha appeared on Loose Women where she responded to theories about Ronnie and Roxy faking their own deaths.
Speaking about a potential return, the 50-year-old told the panel: “You get old enough, you [never] say never to anything, don’t you? You never have an opinion on anything because you’re always proved wrong at some stage.”
Sharing her own suggestion for soap bosses, the actress said: “Maybe I could come back as a poisonous twin!”
Meanwhile, rumours about the iconic duo’s potential return began circulating once again in December 2022 after Rita quote retweeted an old image of her character alongside her on-screen daughter.
Writing alongside the snap, she penned: “Is this my offspring?”
Replying to the tweet, one fan penned: “Hopefully you get to share the screen with her one day,” before another bluntly responded: “Roxy died.”
Rita, 45, sparked return rumours, even more, when she replied: “So did Cathy. And Den. And Bobby Ewing.”
