'Emotional' Cheryl makes West End debut as fans say same thing about huge career U-turn

Cheryl was left visibly emotional as she received a standing ovation following her 2:22 A Ghost Story debut.

The 39-year-old music icon plays Jenny in the play alongside former EastEnders star Jake Wood.

A sold-out Lyric Theatre, London rose to their feet following the official opening night performance on Wednesday (February 1) evening after a show-stopping performance from the singer.

A source told Daily Star: “Cheryl was clearly overcome with emotion at the end of the show when she took her bow alongside her co-stars.

“She was great and fans seemed to love her performance considering she’s a singer and dancer, not an actress.

“There was a buzz about how good Cheryl was after the show with many audience members saying they wanted to go and see the show again.

“The show really keeps the audience on their toes until the very end and there’s even a message which comes up at the end asking fans ‘please don’t tell’ in a bid to keep the show’s plot under wraps.

EastEnders legend Jake Wood appears in the play alongside Cheryl

“Jake and Cheryl have plenty of stand out moments throughout the two-hour show but their co-stars Scott Karim and Louise Ford also put on hell of a performance.”

Cheryl was supported in the audience by her Girls Aloud band mates and close pals Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh.

Giovanni Fletcher, who played the same role as Cheryl in a previous run of 2:22, was also in attendance with McFly star husband Tom Fletcher.

Fight For This Love hitmaker Cheryl will play the role of Jenny until April 23.

It was confirmed last year that the pop icon was taking over the lead part from former Love Island host Laura Whitmore.

As well as Cheryl, Giovanni and Laura, singer-songwriter Lily Allen and Doctor Who actress Mandip Gill have also played Jenny since 2:22 A Ghost Story originated in 2021.

The singer has proved she’s a triple threat

The play, written by Danny Robbins, follows Jenny as she hears the sound of someone moving around the house at the exact time every night and becomes convinced the house is haunted.

Jenny and husband Sam host a dinner party for Lauren, an old university friend of Sam’s, and Ben, her new boyfriend with an open mind for the supernatural.

After discussing the strange noises, Jenny persuades the others to stay up until 2:22am to see what happens.
