George Harrison's lookalike son Dhani now – following in dad's footsteps to TV career

The late Beatles star George Harrison inspired generations of musicians – but did you know that his son has also followed in his footsteps?

George, who would have turned 80 years old on February 25, welcomed his son Dhani with second wife Olivia Harrison on August 1, 1978.

Dhani, 44, is not only a lookalike for his father, but also has his talent for performance.

He began his musical career by helping George at home recording sessions for the Brainwashed album project, learning performance and production techniques.

However, George sadly died on November 29, 2001 at the age of 58 years old from lung cancer.

Following his father’s death, Dhani worked with musicians including George’s Travelling Wilbury’s band mate and ELO legend Jeff Lynne to finish the album.

It was released one year later in 2002, with Dhani winning a Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance on the album track Marwa Blues in 2004.

On the 20th anniversary of the album’s release, Dhani paid tribute to his father and the musicians who helped him to complete the album, by sharing a video of the recording sessions on Twitter.

He captioned the post: “20 years ago I finished what was, to this day, the most difficult project I’ve ever worked on; to finish my dad’s last album without him. There’s no way in the world that had I waited, even a year, to do this, I could’ve gotten through it.”

He then continued to thank musicians including Jeff Lynne, Ryan Ulyate and Marc Mann for “teaching him so much,” and being “such wonderful people.”

Dhani also paid a sweet tribute to his father’s Travelling Wilbury’s band mate Jeff Lynne in the Twitter post, as he said: “@JeffLynnesELO I love you. Thank you for being such a dear friend to my dad and thank you for letting me come and live in your house whilst we worked this great conundrum out. I still think this is one of the best records I’ve ever worked on. Maximum love vibes x Dhani.”

In 2002, Dhani also performed at the Concert for George on the first anniversary of his father’s death, alongside musicians including Beatles band mates Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Joe Brown.

Two years later he also appeared alongside Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne and Prince for a performance of George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps during his father’s posthumous induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame.

From there Dhani has continued to work within the music industry, playing in bands such as thenewno2 and Fistful of Mercy.

He has since released his 2017 solo album In Parallel and was the opening act for Jeff Lynne’s ELO in 2019, as well as collaborating on the development of video game The Beatles: Rock Band.

That’s not all, as Dhani has lent his musical skills to film compositions and provided the score for the 2013 film Beautiful Creatures, TV series Good Girls Revolt and recorded the title song for Netflix series Dogs.

Dhani most recently scored the 2020 film Cut Throat City.

The star also shares updates about his musical collaborations and work on social media, with his official Twitter page listing Joe Strummer and Leila Moss as artists he has recently worked with between 2022 to 2023.

In a recent tweet about his work with Leila Moss, he said: “Our dear sister @LielaMoss has a new record that I am very fortunate to have been a part of! Go listen to her new album ‘Internal Working Model’ now! Congrats Liela on the new jams!”

Away from the limelight, Dhani tends to keep his personal life private, but it is known that he was married to model Solveig Karadottir between 2012 to 2016.

However, Dhani has opened up to Mail Online about his father’s death, saying “there have been so many times I miss my dad.”

“When he died I remember thinking we’d left nothing unsaid and that was good. But then you get older, and there have been so many times I miss my dad,” said Dhani.

“Getting married, going on your stag do – pick any moment and you wish he was there.”

He added: “Death crushes you. But that’s what forms you – you get hammered and hammered and they heat you up and hammer you, heat you up and hammer you, and eventually you’re a sword. You’re brave, you’re ready to be your own man.”
