The Masked Singer fans have accused ITV show bosses of ‘tricking’ the public by suggesting an absent panelist could in fact be behind the mask.
Series 5 began on Saturday night with regulars Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan pondering who could be dressed as the first contestant, Maypole. With Rita Ora absent from their side, however, previous champion Charlie Simpson filled in whilst the singer supposedly filmed in America.
Following Maypole’s performance of Pink’s Never Gonna Not Dance Again, comedian Mo quickly suggested to presenter Joel Dommett that the character’s voice and clues given in the VT suggested Rita was hiding inside. “I think I know who this is,” Mo confidently declared.

He continued: “In the VT package it said TV screens and it was ‘so so’ – so I thought of sewing. [There’s] someone I know who likes knitting. And then it said modelling and green. [There’s] someone I know who is vegan.
“Who isn’t here that is on the show? I think it could be Rita Ora! I promise you Joel.” Considering his guess, Davina exclaimed: “That would be so good!” Scores of viewers were in agreement too, meanwhile, and expressed their views on X (formerly Twitter) straight afterwards.
One commented: “I am totally in agreement with Mo, as soon as she started singing I said that’s Rita even though the clues make no sense #TheMaskedSinger. Another added: “This is a trick. It has to be Rita Ora #MaskedSingerUK #TheMaskedSinger.”
A third asked: “Anyone else thinking rita ora or am i going insane? #TheMaskedSinger.” And a fourth said: “#TheMaskedSinger I could almost believe that is Rita Ora in Maypole, just for a twist.”
Elsewhere on the panel, the best Davina, Jonathan and Charlie could come up with were British tennis star, Emma Raducanu, former Prime Minister, Theresa May, and another singer in Anne Marie.

Ahead of the show airing, presenter Joel was clearly buzzing for the series to start. “Honestly, they are the best costumes ever,” he enthused. “If they don’t make you smile, well, get out! Air Fryer is unbelievably silly. It’s so liberating to be a part of a show where first of all, people really enjoy it and also from my point of view, any idea I have, it’s fair game. Even when it comes to the suits!
“I think we’ve definitely got some of the best vocalists we’ve ever had on the show and we’ve had some really incredible ones in the past. The show goes through an interesting meandering of, we are all here for all the new characters, but then maybe the better singers start to get through in the last rounds, usually the final. Let’s be honest, it’s usually really incredible singers left at that point. This year I really do feel like we’ve got some of the best we’ve ever had.”
The Masked Singer UK continues Saturday on ITV1 and ITVX at 7pm
