Love Island's most brutal recouplings ever – betrayal, heartache and shocking twists

Love Island’s Casa Amor stage was first hatched in 2017 for series three contestants Kem Cetinay, Marcel Somerville and Chris Hughes to enjoy a ‘lads holiday’ after spending some time in the villa.

Casa Amor brought a batch of new girls for the boys to crack on with, and if they thought the connection was strong enough, they could choose to recouple with their new lady.

Similarly, the girls were treated to a new group of lads, and should their heads turn, they could also recouple or stay loyal.

Since its inception, the Casa Amor recoupling has brought chaos and drama to the villa and stands as one of the most intense recouplings of the series, ever.

So, the Daily Star have compiled a list of all of the most brutal Casa Amor recouplings viewers have ever watched.

Kem and Amber

The first ever Casa Amor recoupling did not disappoint, with the boys and the girls feeling the pressure to remain loyal or follow their heart and recouple.

For Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies, who had been coupled up from the start, getting back at one another was their huge gameplan as the pair had a massive argument just moments before Casa Amor was announced.

Unsure whether their other half would recouple, both Kem and Amber chose to recouple in a shocking turn of events, with Kem bringing back Chyna Mills and Amber choosing Nathan Joseph.

Despite their recouplings, when the boys returned to the main villa, Kem and Amber discussed their differences and within days ditched their new partners and got back together, going on to win the third series of the show.

Curtis and Amy

During the intense recoupling, professional dancer Curtis Pritchard felt that it was the perfect time to announce to the group that he had feelings for someone else and wasn’t happy in his relationship with Amy Hart – without Amy present to hear it.

Prompted by host Caroline Flack, Curtis said: “I’ve been lying to myself and most of all, I had been lying to Amy, and that’s not a good thing I just hope everything can be sorted out and this will even make us stronger than ever before, or this will break us.”

Despite his announcement, Curtis chose to stick with Amy, who was thrilled when she emerged from Casa Amor single and relieved to be back together, but was brought back down to earth was Curtis told her that they “needed to chat” after the ceremony.

Amy told the group she’d missed Curtis “so much” and later declared that she’d returned to the villa single to tell Curtis that she loved him, in what is now a famous meme from the series.

Amber and Michael

Love Island fans felt sick to their stomachs as they watched another relationship from series five crash and burn at the Casa Amor recoupling.

Michael Griffiths and Amber Gill had been coupled up since the start of the series and appeared to be falling for one another.

However, Michael’s head turned for bombshell Joanna Chimonides and at the recoupling, he admitted that he hadn’t been “true to himself” and “bit his tongue” when he wouldn’t normally do so, hinting that all was’t sweet between him and Amber.

Amber returned to the villa single and a huge argument took place after the recoupling, with Michael branding Amber “childish”.

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury were the only couple from the series to stay loyal to one another.

Shaughna and Callum

Shaughna Phillips’ luck soon ran out with scaffolder Callum Jones after his loyalty wavered during Casa Amor.

The pair had had ups and downs long before the Casa Amor stage and Shaughna told the group that she was “hopeful” he’d return single.

“The past few days have definitely been an eye opener. They’ve definitely made me realise that I probably moan at him way too much and I just miss having him around. So I do want him back, preferably on his own,” she told host Laura Whitmore.

“He had his loyalty tested with Eve, he had his loyalty tested a little bit with Rebecca, my luck’s been good up until here, so I’m hoping that it’s still there,” Shaughna devastatingly revealed just moments before Callum returned with Molly Smith on his arm.

Despite her heartache, Shaughna’s two-word message to Callum is still a famous catchphrase from the show to this day: “Congrats, hun.”

Tanya and Shaq

This year’s Winter Love Island got off to a slow start, garnering viewing figures of only 1.4million for the opening episode with new and highly anticipated host, Maya Jama.

Up until Casa Amor, fans had branded the series as “the worst yet” for how “boring” it had been, however, Casa Amor soon brought the drama that viewers were missing.

Tanya Manhenga and Shaq Muhammad were one of the first couples to be formed on the show and after a steamy night in the hideaway, the pair told each other that they were in love, belting out those three special words before Casa Amor.

While Shaq stayed truthful to his word, Tanya’s head was turned by Casa Amor hunk Martin Akinola, and after a sneaky bedroom smooch, Tanya brought Martin back to “test their connection” in the main villa, leaving Shaq heartbroken and dumped.

Love Island airs nightly on ITV2 and ITVX at 9pm
