Malala’s response to Jimmy Kimmel’s joke shows her “willingness to prioritise activism” says one body language expert.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate attended the 2023 Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 12) but ceremony host Jimmy Kimmel was branded a “national disgrace” after fans claimed he “harassed” Malala in a bizarre segment.
However, celebrity psychic and body language expert Inbaal Honigman has claimed that Malala’s response means that she “isn’t phased by the occasion”.

During the event, Jimmy approached several celebrities in the crowd to ask them “fan-submitted” questions.
Approaching Malala, the Oscars host asked, “as the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner in history, I was wondering do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?”

The question was met with some laughter from the audience.
However, Malala didn’t find the funny side and seriously responded, “I only talk about peace.”
Inbaal thinks that Malala’s response shows her “willingness to prioritise activism”.
She told Daily Star: “Jimmy goes into the audience to chat to attendees, and he stops to greet Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist Malala Yousafzai, asking her a viewer question. Kimmel is a comedian, and the question is expectedly silly, but Malala listens very intently.

“As he reads out the joke question, Malala’s eyes focus on the middle distance and she blinks and nods lightly, taking every word in.
“She’s paying close attention to the question, which shows her caring nature and how willing she is, even in such a frivolous occasion, to prioritise her activism.”
Inbaal also explained that she think that the scene was likely “preplanned” because Malala didn’t laugh and just gave a “meaningful answer.”
She also added that Malala may not have joined in with the laughter because she might be “nervous” but isn’t”phased by the ceremony.

She explained: “She makes eye contact with Jimmy and says her answer, which shows us that she’s happy to bring a little bit of activism to the ceremony, and isn’t phased by the occasion.”
Jimmy has been branded by fans as a “national disgrace” after the joke.
One fan typed: “Jimmy Kimmel is a national disgrace. this woman deserves better.”
Another wrote: “Watching the #Oscars from home, I was absolutely horrified with the interaction between @jimmykimmel and @Malala Jimmy, you were incredibly disrespectful.”
