Martin Clunes compared his manhood to a “big Cornish pasty” – but said his US co-star Ben Affleck had a “mini sausage roll” in a very racy admission.
Martin was starring alongside Mel Giedroyc in the ITV show Mel Giedroyc & Martin Clunes Explore Britain by the Book back in September when he made a startlingly X-rated confession, which still has fans talking. During a discussion about his 1998 performance in Shakespeare in Love, Martin got chatting about the codpieces the actors wore on set.
Clunes played Richard Burbage in the flick, while Ben Affleck played Ned Alleyn. His then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow also lent her famous face to the film, portraying Viola De Lesseps.

Martin said on the ITV programme: “On Shakespeare in Love, Ben Affleck came in – handsomest man in the world. He had a tiny codpiece. I had the biggest codpiece in that film!”
Mel chimed in: “And rightly so!” as Martin responded with the joke: “Well, thank you. Mine was like a big Cornish pasty. Affleck – chipolata.”
“Or a mini sausage roll!” Mel giggled, before asking: “Was he annoyed?” Martin explained: “I think he was pretty impervious at that point, he was going out with Gwyneth.
“He is really nice actually, I liked him. And we knew Gwyneth because [Clunes’ wife] Philippa [Braithwaite] produced Sliding Doors.”
Mel couldn’t help but ask: “What do you think of the vagina candle?” as Martin blustered: “I can’t light it!”
At the time of making the film, Martin confessed he “might as well be a porn star”, due to his massive codpiece. He said back in the nineties: “The way things are going, I think I’ve got a big future in pornography.”

Filming BBC drama Touch and Go at the time, Clunes had plenty to say about getting down and dirty for sex scenes: “Yes, plenty of kit-off scenes, I’m afraid. When I started doing the film, I did one scene in my underwear – I’m becoming an expert at this – and I felt really self-conscious about my body.
“But a few sex scenes down the line and you lose all inhibitions. It’s strangely empowering, and you suddenly think you can do anything.” And as for what Philippa thought about the whole thing, he said: “She didn’t like the idea of it, but she knows it’s my job and she’s very good about it. It just all gets a little weird – you come home and your wife asks: ‘What did you do today dear?'”
