The Simpsons eerily predicted Barbie movie and Trump arrest in same episode 29 years ago

The Simpsons have only gone and done it again.

The beloved cartoon is notorious for predicting the future, with fans adamant that it foretold a series of world events, including the Ebola outbreak, the horse meat scandal and even the Coronavirus pandemic.

But now fans are convinced the show’s writers must be time travellers after it appears to have made two predictions of current events — former president Donald Trump’s arraignment and the buzz around Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie film — in the same episode.

On Tuesday Trump made headlines when he was charged with 34 felonies over allegations of “hush money” paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, making him the first ex-president to be charged with a crime.

The huge story just so happened to coincide with the release of a new teaser for the highly-anticipated Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

While the two events may seem completely unrelated, both appeared to be part of the plot for a 1994 episode of The Simpsons.

In an episode titled Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy, Lisa decides to plead with the creator of the Barbie-esque Malibu Stacey dolls to design one that gives young girls a positive role model.

In one of the scenes from the episode, the Simpson family can be seen watching the news.

The clip shows news anchor Kent Brockman talking about Lisa’s campaign, telling viewers: “Though it was unusual to spend 28 minutes reporting on a doll, this reporter found it impossible to stop talking. It’s just really fascinating news folks. Good night.”

But at the last minute, Brockman turns back to the camera, adding: “Oh and the president was arrested”.

The clip has quickly started circulating on Twitter and while some have chalked it down as just another bizarre coincidence, others are convinced it’s the work of a prophet on The Simpsons team.

One person wrote: “I’m convinced someone on the Simpsons’ team was a time traveller.”

Another said: “HOLY S**T! They really do predict everything!”

“Not gonna lie this is the wildest Simpsons prediction yet,” a third added.

Although The Simpsons episode didn’t make any reference to a Malibu Stacey film, director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will feature a president Barbie, doctor Barbie and even a Barbie with a Nobel Prize in physics — just like the role models Lisa was campaigning for.

It’s also not the first time the cartoon has made a Trump prediction, with the show predicting both of Trump’s presidential campaigns.

The Bart to the Future episode that aired in 2000 sees Lisa Simpson set to become the US president and tasked with clearing up the mess left behind by the former president — Donald Trump.

“As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump,” Lisa says to her staff in the episode.

Then in 2015, The Simpsons predicted Trump’s 2024 presidential run in a mini-episode released on YouTube titled Trumptastic Journey.

At one point in the episode, Homer can be seen flying over a presidential campaign sign reading “Trump 2024”.

Simpsons producer Al Jean shared a still from the episode to Twitter, captioning it “@TheSimpsons As predicted in 2015”.
