Wildest celeb April Fool pranks – from Ant and Dec rebrand to Holly Willoughby's new job

While many of us enjoy playing a cheeky prank on our nearest and dearest during April Fool’s Day, celebs have often been known to chime in on the fun too.

A-List celebrities with a love for humour are among those with the biggest and best pranks which have kept their fans on their toes troughout the years.

But although some pranks go down like a led balloon, others have left fans in surprise or with a smile on their faces.

So as the day gets underway Daily Star has taken a flick through some of the wildest April Fool’s Day pranks that have taken place.

In 2015, former Geordie Shore babe Vicky Pattison revealed that she was heading over to the US to become Kim Kardashian’s personal trainer.

Talking openly about her new business venture she said: “I met Kim and Kanye when they were in London for the Brits last month.

“Our managers know each other so they introduced us and we got talking about fitness.

“I was telling her about my DVD and nutritional products and Kim was well excited about it. She asked me there and then if I’d be up for going over to LA and training her myself.”

But many were unaware that Vicky had in fact teamed up with The Mirror to fool her friends, family and other media outlets.

Ellen DeGeneres accident

Fans thought Ellen DeGeneres had got into an accident before work

American chat show host Ellen DeGeneres tricked her viewers and audience members when she pretended she had an accident on her way to work.

Supplied with her neck-brace, Ellen spoke openly to her audience about what had happened to her on the way into her former TV studios in 2014.

However her trick didn’t last very long when she explained that she had a “sudden realisation” that it was April Fool’s Day.

Removing her neck accessory with haste, the audience quickly exhaled with relief.

Sam Smith sexuality

Award-winning singer Sam Smith decided to play a prank on his fans in 2015, tweeting about his sexuality in a matter-of-fact way.

Heading over to Twitter, the 30-year-old simply wrote: “Guys I have some news… I’m straight.”

With his fans already assuming that he was in fact joking, the singer then tweeted, “April fools,” along with a laughing, crying emoji.

Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly left their followers concerned when they announced a big rebrand in April 2021.

Taking to their official Twitter account, the pair who are famously known as Ant and Dec informed fans that they were set to make a big change.

The pair announced: “Some big news for you guys… after 30 long years together we’ve decided a change is needed, and so without further ado, we can announce we’ll now be officially known as Dec & Ant.

“It’s only fair on the little guy x #DecAndAnt.”

Although most were not phased by the pair’s gag, others were left confused.

One social media user responded: “When I tell you my heart rate dropped whilst reading the first half of that caption. Then remembered the date, maybe next time try fainting again.”

Tom Hardy’s James Bond tease

Although actor Tom Hardy has been tipped as the next actor to play James Bond on a number of occasions, he couldn’t help but tease that he had been given the legendary part.

In 2018 a joke was made that Tom would be taking over the role with the actor appearing to confirm that it was true.

In an Instagram post, he wrote: “Dammit I was in my tux and on the runway Gtg no drama GB RTB headed back to NOLA stood down 19.”

After seeing the message online, fans headed over to social media to share the news, with one person writing: “Just heard news that Daniel Craig’s quit as James bond and Tom hardy is new bond.

“Don’t know whether it’s true or just April fools joke not sure if I should believe this news need confirmation #confused.”

Holly Willoughby new job role

This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby rarely shies away from a prank or two and she made sure she got involved in the April Fool’s Day fun in 2017.

Holly left fans stunned when they discovered that she would replace Jake Humphries and present her first live football show.

Sharing the news on his page, Jake tweeted: “BREAKING: Sadly I’m ill so won’t be on @btsport today. Thanks to my mate @hollywills – stepping in to host her FIRST live football game.”

Pretending to confirm the news on her page, Holly then wrote: “Excited and nervous!!!” Followed by a blowing kiss emoji.
