‘Worst home makeover’ saw homeowners say ‘oh sh**’ with straw glued to walls

One of the worst ever home makeovers saw a celebrity interior designer create a mosaic of her own face on a homeowner’s wall – while she also opted to glue some ‘organic’ hay all over one room.

Trading Spaces star Hildi Santo-Tomas prides herself on being “original” but said she doesn’t just go for “shock value” – but two couples were left shell-shocked by her renovations.

First came the mosaic of her own face.

Positioned on a bright yellow wall, Hildi sketched out a cartoon-style self-portrait, showing her with big eyes, parted lips and plenty of dark hair.

The mosaic took up an entire wall of one couple’s home, off-set by huge yellow-and-orange loveseats and dark mahogany tables.

Worse still, the mosaic was in the owners’ dining room – meaning they had to look at the artwork while eating.

It might not have been the worst culprit, however, as Hildi stunned a pair of homeowners when she glued straw to every wall in their room for a truly bizarre look, complete with a bright pink ceiling.

Homeowners April and Leslie admitted the room “smelled good” before opening their eyes to witness it in full, with April blurting: “Oh my god! Oh sh**!”

She then attempted to cover herself, telling Hildi: “This is great. It’s pink.”

Leslie then said: “The walls are a little bit funky. I’m not sure about the straw, actually. The kids will peel it off.”

All Hildi could say was: “You knew it was straw – I’m glad you could tell what it was!”

“It’s a farm, with pink,” Leslie said, while April added: “I said I really didn’t want a kid room, but I’m going to be cleaning up straw for the rest of my life.”

She yelled at Hildi: “I can’t believe what you did!”

April then began to peel the hay off the walls – which Hildi immediately stuffed into her mouth and began to eat, cheerily telling them: “It’s organic!”

The next day, their baby was “gagging on the hay”, claimed neighbour Rhea Wisherop.

The pair later opened up to SF Gate about their experience, with April confessing: “I was so disappointed.”

But the worst part? Her unique fireplace, constructed from a 13-foot section of a Douglas fir tree, was sledgehammered and sawed out to be replaced with pine.

She confessed: “We didn’t know they had taken out the mantel until [they] were gone.”

Replacing the wood would cost $3,000.
