The ’27 Club’ is the tragic connection that links the premature passing of many famed musicians.

To become a member, the performer just needs to be in their 27th year on this planet when they move on to meet their maker. The term really picked up when Kurt Cobain took his own life in 1994, and music fans started to connect the Nirvana frontman’s age to that of the others who’d joined the club decades before him.

And when Amy Winehouse passed away in 2011, yet more focus was given to the significance of the age. It has since been back dated as people tried to make sense of the phenomenon which appears to have welcomed one of its earliest musician members in the 1930s.

Initially, the club was primarily associated with musicians, but it has since expanded to include young actors and artists who have lost their lives due to a range of reasons including drug or alcohol addiction, suicide, and freak accidents.

On this very day (July 3), however, two musicians became members of the club, albeit a couple of years apart.

In 1969, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones died at his country home in England, while in 1971 The Doors’ Jim Morrison passed away in the bathtub of the rented apartment he was staying in Paris.

If he was still with us, former Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones would be 82 years old.

At around midnight on the night of 2–3 July 1969, Jones was discovered motionless at the bottom of his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm.

His Swedish girlfriend, Anna Wohlin, was convinced he was alive when he was taken out of the pool, insisting he still had a pulse.

However, by the time the doctors arrived, it was too late, and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Theories surrounding Jones’s death developed soon afterwards, with associates of the Stones claiming to have information that he was murdered. But, after years of theories, in 2010 Sussex Police confirmed it would not be re-opening the case, and backed the coroner’s original verdict of death by misadventure.

If Jim was still alive he would be 81 years old.

His death came two years to the day after Jones and approximately nine months after the deaths of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin

In 1979 when Francis Ford Coppola used The End in the soundtrack for Apocalypse Now, the cult of Jim Morrison started to grow, as did the theories arising about the 27 connection.

With Brian, Jimi and Janis all passing on at the same age, the belief that Jim had been special, that his death was fate, and that there was something weird going on was reinforced.

The fact that Jim’s girlfriend, Pam Courson, died at the same age underlined the weirdness of the coincidence.
