BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay brands Charlie Stayt ‘messy’ as he makes dig at co-star’s habit

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay was quick to point the finger at his co-star Charlie Stayt as he labelled him “messy”.

During Tuesday’s instalment of the popular morning show (January 9), Jon was back on the famous red sofa alongside his colleague Sarah Campbell. Discussing the latest headlines, the pair also spoke about a story regarding George Micheal’s white sofa.

Last week, reports emerged that a damaged sofa that appeared on the cover of George Michael’s final studio album had been made to look brand new by a company in Hull. But the presenters’ attentions then turned to their red sofa which Sarah branded as a safer option as it wouldn’t get too dirty easily.

But Jon seemed to think differently and appeared to suggest that the couch needed an update. Kicking off the conversation, Sarah said: “I still think a white sofa though, phwoar! It’s a bit risky isn’t it?”

Jon replied: “Yeah I was looking at this one during that piece, we need to get it cleaned already.” But Sarah reminded Jon of how practical the settee was.

Jon then said: “Well, Charlie’s been messy with pens and stuff.” Lifting up a magazine beside him, Jon looked far from impressed.

Following Jon’s co-star admission, Sarah quickly steered the conversation in a different direction. Reminding her colleague of the next segment coming up she said: “Let’s hand to the weather. Sarah [Keith-Lucas] is here.”

Although Jon had a fair bit to say about Charlie, the pair are never seen together on the show. Jon usually presents the breakfast show alongside Sally Nugent from Monday to Wednesday. Meanwhile, Charlie is usually seen alongside co-host Naga Munchetty from Thursday to Saturday.

On Tuesday’s show, despite the late George Micheal’s sofa being a hot topic, fans of the programme didn’t seem to think so and headed over to X formerly known as Twitter to complain.

The white sofa was a hot topic on the BBC show

One viewer said: “@BBCBreakfast please start reporting news. Gaza, Ukraine seem to have disappeared replaced by a cheesy uninteresting story about a white sofa. You’ve hit the lowest of the low.”

While another echoed: “That’s the second morning we’ve had that inane, nothing story about George Michael’s sofa on #BBCBreakfast.”
