BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay has ‘bad start’ to 2024 as co-star demands he leaves after announcement

Morning Live star Gethin Jones demanded Jon Kay leave as he made a “bad start” to 2024.

During Tuesday’s instalment (January 2) of BBC Breakfast, Jon hosted on the red sofa with Sarah Campbell, who stepped in for Sally Nugent. An hour before the programme ended, Jon and Sarah caught up with the Morning Live team to find out what was coming up.

After filling in his co-stars, Gethin revealed Morning Live would kick off at the new time of 9:30am. When Jon repeated the time, the 45-year-old responded: “Thank you Jon. Thanks for reiterating that.”

Over on X, Jon revealed it’s a huge week for the two programmes as they’re both being extended. He wrote: “It’s a big week for the #BBCBreakfast team.

“From now on, the programme will be 15 minutes longer Mon-Fri. Then at 0930 our friends and neighbours @BBCMorningLive take over – and their show has been extended, too! The UK’s two biggest morning shows just got BIGGER!”

Jon had a query for Morning Live presenters Gethin and Helen Skelton following the news. “I know your programme is also going on longer, but does this mean you get a little bit of a lie-in?” he asked.

Gethin replied: “I thought that but they made us come in earlier just to make sure we were ready today because we’ve got a lot to get through. But thanks for bringing that up as well Jon!”

Jon couldn’t resist making a cheeky dig at his co-stars as he quipped: “We’ll just hold the fort until 9:30 until you’ve had you’re hair done and you’re ready.”

A shocked Helen looked at Gethin as she exclaimed: “We are ready! What you on about? Cheeky monkey.” The studio erupted with laughter as the TV star demanded: “Go now Jon! It’s a bad start to the year.”

Jon wished his co-stars a happy new year before plugging their new time once again. “Morning Live here on BBC One every day now from 9:30,” he told viewers.
