BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst shuts down co-star as he drops ‘c-word’ live on air

BBC Breakfast’s Nina Warhurst cheekily called out her colleague on live TV for uttering the “c-word” way too early in the year.

The famous red sofa was occupied by Ben Thompson and Sarah Campbell on Wednesday (August 7) as they presented the day’s major news stories from around the globe.

Starting the day with a discussion on the Buy Now, Pay Later scheme, show regular Nina highlighted concerns from debt charities and the new Labour government about the need for stricter regulations to protect users of the finance service.

As Nina wrapped up her segment, Ben chimed in: “It’s really important and dare I say it, people will be thinking about Christmas presents and things like that won’t they? and spending now and maybe spreading that out?”

Nina called out: “I can’t believe you’ve mentioned the c-word. It’s August.”, reports the Express. To which Ben quipped: “It’s not that long.” Light-heartedly, Nina retorted: “Someone is more organised than I am.”

This playful banter comes right after Ben issued a solemn warning to viewers in Tuesdays (August 6) programme concerning an item about a British man who had been held in modern-day slavery for over two decades, marking one of the most serious cases of its kind.

Subsequent to this shocking incident, the victim’s family challenged the government and subsequently received a landmark compensation payout. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, was imprisoned at a travellers site by the Rooney family, together with 17 other susceptible individuals, enduring forced labour, meagre sustenance, and physical abuse for non-compliance.

Years on, the victim’s sister remains a staunch crusader for justice, revealing she has finally clinched the compensation her brother deserves after enduring years of agony.

In light of sensitive material, Ben has been proactive in alerting viewers to the forthcoming “upsetting” content. The cautionary heads-up Ben dished to dedicated viewers follows a wave of criticism levelled at BBC Breakfast for omitting trigger warnings ahead of graphic surgical footage last weekend.

The BBC caught a heap of flack for broadcasting grisly scenes of cosmetic surgery gone awry that had viewers retching. The contentious snippet unravelling Pinky Jolley’s nightmarish experience showed her struggle with basic eating for years following a disastrously bad weight-loss surgery.

Her story is a harrowing one; she ended up critically ill and solely surviving on a feeding tube because of the botched job.

Folk chowing down on their brekkie were horrified by the graphic visuals and lambasted the morning program for not flagging the distressful content. Miffed viewers took to Twitter – the microblogging service priorly known as X – to air their grievances, with one moaning: “Graphic surgery scenes this early in a morning… yum.”

Another weighed in, equally peeved: “Surgery and dog s**t lovely Sunday topics this morning.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
