The original ending of Beetlejuice would have completely changed the story.
Screenwriter Larry Wilson revealed that the horror’s ending wasn’t actually supposed to be a happy one. Three decades after the film was originally released, the writer spoke to Yahoo about the gruesome ending Lydia Deetz had in store.
He explained: “Our first ending was Lydia – she died in a fire and was able to join Barbara and Adam in the afterlife. A couple of people said to us: ‘Do you really think that’s a good idea? Is that really the message you want to be sent to the teenagers of the world? Die in a fire?’”

“So yeah, it probably was darker,” Wilson quipped before going on to reveal more details about the iconic 1988 horror comedy. According to the writer, Beetlejuice was supposed to have a totally different name entirely.
“The title that I remember being suggested, pretty much before the release, was House Ghost. I bet it was David Geffen who said no to that, and a big firm no. There were marketing people within Warner Bros. who thought no-one would know what Beetlejuice was, but they’d know what a house ghost was. Thank god [they went with Beetlejuice].”
Larry joked that he “wouldn’t like to be talking about House Ghost the movie” and breathed a sigh of relief that Beetlejuice was settled upon. Back in 2017 the idea of a Beetlejuice sequel baffled lead actress Winona Ryder, who spoke to Collider about the concept.
She said she “didn’t really know what was going on with that” and that Beetlejuice “was an iconic film”. Ryder said: “The only way it could really ever be done is with Tim [Burton] and Michael [Keaton]. I don’t know. There’s something that really resonates with all ages, with that film. It’s interesting!”
Winona said “it would be great if it happened if it was the right circumstances” and joked that she was “getting older”. She found the idea of a sequel “very flattering and very humbling indeed”.
Ryder reprises her role as Lydia Deetz, alongside Keaton and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega as her daughter Astrid Deetz, in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is set to be released on 6 September.
